to the "veteran" Young
Judaean kibbutz members
who live there, and a sense of
accomplishment for a hard

enjoyed the switch from the
classroom to the outdoors.
"It's a chance to see how
they live on a kibbutz in the
Arava," Mr. Zeff said. "It's the
time of year for their harvest
and it's good, and fun, to be
able to help them with their
work."
While most of Mr. Zeff's
friends back in the United
States are in their first year
of college, he's glad he decid-

"A lot of people just go
through the system. Instead,
I chose this, was able to spend
a year in another country,
travel, and do something out
of the ordinary."
After three months in
Israel, Mr. Zeff says he is
more conscious of the nuances
of life here, as well as the
political situation in the
region as a whole. "Instead of
reading about what's going
on in Israel in a newspaper,
I'm in Israel. I see and hear
what is happening. And it
definitely strengthened my
connection to Israel, being
able to see all the sites I've
been told about for years. On
Simchat Torah I was at the
Western Wall dancing with
the Torah with thousands of
Jews from all over the world.
I couldn't do that in Detroit."
