A
lmost everything in
Israel has some con-
nection to the Bible.
Take Yakhin Hakal, one of
Israel's largest and most
modern fruit and vegetable
processing firms. Most people
assume the name Yakhin is
related to the Hebrew word
for "prepare" but as manag-
ing director Arie Geva ex-
plains it, "The two pillars of
the Temple in Jerusalem
were called Boaz and Yakhin.
When the firm was establish-
ed more than 60 years ago, its
main competitor was a firm
called Boaz, so our founders
decided to call their firm
Yakhin."
Sixty years later, Yakhin is
still, in a sense, a pillar of
Israeli industry.
Israel's largest exporter of
processed and packaged fruits
and vegetables, Yakhin had a
total turnover in 1989 of $144

million, with total sales ap-
proximating $172 million in
1990. Some $48 million out of
$63 million in processed food
sales were sold abroad.
"Our main markets are
Common Market countries,
but we export all over the
world," says Mr. Geva, a
dynamic former bank ex-
ecutive who has made major
changes in the firm since he
took over as managing direc-
tor two years ago. "We have
started selling to the Far East
as well and also expect to
develop markets in eastern
Europe."
Mr. Geva is not unduly wor-
ried about the effects of Com-
mon Market legislation,
slated for 1992, which some
feel may hinder Israeli ex-
ports. "We are prepared, and
we feel that no major changes
in our market demand will
result. As a matter of fact,
that year may be a positive
one for us because Japan is
due to eliminate quotas on
citrus concentrate which will
provide an excellent oppor-
tunity for us to expand our
business there."
Although the company pro-
duces a variety of products, its
mainstay has always been
Israel's most famous product
— citrus fruit. Unlike other
firms, Yakhin has always
maintained control over every
stage of citrus production.
