Computer Sciences
Are Developed
Jerusalem — An "indus-
trial incubator" project aimed
at assisting small teams of
immigrant Soviet scientists
to develop their research con-
cepts into commercial appli-
cations has been launched by
the Yissum Research Devel-
opment Company of the He-
brew University of Jeru-
salem.
A first "incubator" group
has been formed in the area
of computational sciences in
conjunction with Scitex Ltd.,
a leading Israeli firm in the
field of computer graphics.
This computational
sciences incubator is being
led by Professor Sorin
Solomon of the Hebrew
University's Rachah Institute
of Physics. He and three re-
cent Soviet immigrant scien-
tists, who are being funded by
the Ministry of Immigrant
Absorption, are working
together on research aimed at
further development of Scitex
equipment.
Yissum, which is register-
ing this group as a legal com-
pany, hopes to follow this
model by using the know-how
of other immigrant scientists
in various fields to develop
research and development
projects with commercial
potential.
In all, Yissum — working in
cooperation with the Jeru-
salem Development Authori-
ty — is coordinating a pro-
gram to develop 10 research
and development incubator
groups that will employ 50
new immigrant scientists.
Most of the funding will be
provided by the Chief Scien-
tist's Office of the Ministry of
Trade and Industry as part of
a program sponsoring em-
ployment for immigrant
scientists.
In addition to the incubator
development program,
Yissum has also initiated a
scientific/technological con-
sultancy program to evaluate
proposals advanced by im-
migrant scientists. Under
this service Hebrew Universi-
ty researchers assess the new
projects in terms of their
scientific and technological
potential.
