clearly been signaled out for
particularly adverse treat-
ment. The Jews are the ones
who, as a group, are forbidden
to emigrate freely. Their in-
ternal passports bear the
designation "Mussawi" (of
the Mosaic faith). No other
Syrians are identified by
religion in their passports.
In 1956, after the Sinai
Campaign, every Jewish
home was marked with a red
number and Jews were not
allowed to travel farther than
3.6 miles from their homes.
The Six-Day War, in 1967,
resulted in six months of
house arrest for the entire
Jewish population.
The Mukhabarat patrols
the Jewish quarter of
Damascus around the clock;
no non-resident is allowed to
enter .without permission and
no foreigner can meet with a
Syrian Jew without the secret
police's authorization. Jews
must inform the Mukhabarat
about any foreign currency
they might receive and need
special permission to sell a
car, a house or anything of
value.

given them to Moslems, par-
ticularly Palestinians. The
teaching of modern Hebrew
or anything about the State of
Israel is forbidden, and the
directors of the Jewish schools
are all Moslems who report
regularly to the Mukhabarat.
There are many more young
Jewish women in Syria than
young Jewish men, because
many of the latter have ex-
caped. Marriage prospects for
these women thus remain
uncertain and some may be
forced to intermarry and
convert.
Six Jewish men are being
held in Syrian prisons for
traveling abroad without of-
ficial permission or for at-
tempting to leave Syria. In
August 1990, four young Jews
— a married man and his
pregnant wife and an engag-
ed couple — were arrested for
trying to cross the border.
Men and women were jailed
separately. The pregnant
woman gave birth to her baby
behind bars, prior to both
women being released. The
two men remain incarcerated,
and there have been reports
that they have been tortured
