important. American Jewry
is a very good Jewish com-
munity, but they didn't go
through the same thing that
we went through. That's why
it's important that we get
together and feel close to each
other from time to time."
After Mr. Arison, Mr.
Netanyahu took the stage
and recounted his family's
Zionist history.
"My father moved to Israel
because it's the only place in
the world where a Jew is not
a Zhid, including in America.
Israel is where a Jew be-
longs," Mr. Netanyahu said.
But he seemed to agree
with Mr. Arison's call for
drastic reform. "The Jews,
with our longing for the
Messiah, are the only people
capable of inventing
socialism. But we are also the
only ones who are so in-
dividualistic that we could
never live in a socialist
system."
Both speakers expressed joy
at the recent airlift of Ethio-
pian Jews to Israel. Mr.
Arison said that the great-
ness of this, and many of
Israel's other accomplish-
ments, beginning with the
1967 Six-Day War, had
brought him back to the
Jewish community and even-
tually back to Israel. Many in
the rapt audience clearly
shared the sentiment.
The following day, the con-
ference organizers were still
flushed with excitement.
"The Israeli community
was starved for something
like this," said businessman
Mickey Dorsman, who, along
with his wife, Shari, who is
Mr. Arison's daughter, co-
chaired the symposium. "Our
first decision was to have
something in Hebrew,
something serious, and we
are delighted that so many
good people came out."
According to Mr. Dorsman,
"every Israeli feels some guilt
about leaving Israel," and
neither the American Jewish
community nor Israel's
diplomatic mission in the
United States have made
them feel very welcome here.
"But we felt, especially
after this war, that it was the
right time to make a state-
ment as Israeli-Americans, a
statement to Israel that
nobody else could make, that
`We are here, but we are
behind you.' "
Dr. Liba also expressed his
approval of the day's pro-
ceedings, but was quick to
distance the Israeli govern-
ment from them. "I am
always happy, as is Bibi
Netanyahu, to speak abut
Israel and to provide informa-
tion on behalf of Israel. But
