Coexistence
Makes Progress
New York — Despite the in-
tifada, and in many ways
because of it, Jewish-Arab
coexsitence programs in
Israel continue to grow and
make progress — despite set-
backs — in fostering better
relations between Israel's
Arab and Jewish citizens.
In a newly released
American Jewish Committee
publication, titled Jewish-
Arab Relations in Israel, Ken-
neth Bandler, director of
public information for the Na-
tional Jewish Community
Relations Advisory Council,
describes several Jewish-Arab
coexistence programs in
Israel, and how they have
been shaped by the intifada
and the Persian Gulf War.
This booklet is one in an
ongoing series of AJC papers
on international perspectives.
Also included in this
publication is a document
drafted by a small group of
Israeli Arabs and Jews titled
"A Civil Covenant Between
Arab and Jewish Citizens of
Israel." The purpose of this
document, in which the
American Jewish Committee
played a consultative role, is
to set forth the principles that
form the foundation of the
shared civic culture in Israel,
the role of the • government
and responsibility of all
citizens to strengthen those
principles, and the fundamen-
tal issues that need to be ad-
dressed to assure that both
communities continue to live
in harmony.
New Village
Is Ecological
A new site for an "Ecologi-
cal Village," Har Ya'aran, was
inaugurated on Independence
Day when 800 people went to
view the location. The village,
founded by a non-profit
organization, is the first of its
kind in the country. Original-
ly the organization numbered
100 but has quickly increas-
ed to 300. It is expected that
one-third of the first 300
residents will be new
immigrants.
The village will recycle
various commodities in-
cluding water, paper and gar-
bage and it will develop
technology for sewage purifi-
cation. The new system will
be detached from the Na-
tional Water Supply System
and water will be collected in
subterranean tanks. Only
`soft' detergents will be used
in homes so that laundry and
kitchen water can be used to
water gardens. Homes will be
heated by solar energy.
