Sephardics Brief
Government

A top State Department of-
ficial heard last week from a
Jewish group with a slightly
different perspective.
A 20-person delegation
from the American Sephardi
Federation met Thursday
with John H. Kelly, Under
Secretary of State for Near
Eastern and South Asian Af-
fairs. Originally, the group
was scheduled to meet with
Deputy Secretary of State
Lawrence Eagleburger, who
had to cancel.
"We simply wanted to give
them some input from the
Sephardic point of view,"
said Norman Belmonte, a
New Jersey Jewish activist
who chaired the meeting.
"We have a good cross-
section of Sephardim coming
down, representing many
Arab and Middle East
lands."
That unique perspective
included the idea that Arabs
and Jews are not doomed to
eternal conflict.
"Jews and Arabs have liv-
ed together in peace in many
places," Mr. Belmonte said.
"Historically, there is not
necessarily an animosity
between Jews and Moslems.
There are places today
where they still coexist.
That was one of the mes-
sages we wanted to convey."
The ASF group also urged
Mr. Kelly to crank up the
pressure on countries like
Syria to release Jews who
are not free to emigrate. ❑

"Fly-In" Planned
For Guarantees

Planners continue to be
impressed by the response of
Jewish communities around
the nation to the call for a
"fly-in" on Sept. 12 to press
for legislation providing $10
billion in loan guarantees
for Israel.
So far, delegations from at
least 31 states are signed up
to make the trek to Wash-
ington, where they will be
briefed on the politics of the
loan guarantee measure and
hear about how events in the
Soviet Union will affect the
issue. Then they will fan out
across Capitol Hill and make
their pitch to lawmakers.
"This is going to be serious
lobbying, not just a tour of
Capitol Hill," said Larry
Rubin, executive vice
chairman of the National
Jewish Community Rela-
tions Advisory Council
(NJCRAC), one of the groups
coordinating the fly-in effort.
"Communities have re-
sponded very energetically."
