LOCAL NEWS I Midrasha College Opens Fall Classes Registrations are being taken for a series of courses co-sponsored by Temple Emanu-El and the Midrasha- College of Jewish Studies. The courses will meet on Mondays for six weeks begin- ing Sept. 16. Cantor Norman Rose of Temple Emanu-El will teach a course entitled "Is There Such a Thing as Jewish Music" from 7-8 p.m. This course will survey religious and secular music of the Jewish people and the effect that other cultures had upon "Jewish" music. Rabbi Lane Steinger of Temple Emanu-El will teach "Reforms in the Bible," 7-8. p.m. Rabbi Steinger will trace the biblical movements which made for change and growth of the Jewish people. Dr. Ralph Williams, associate professor of English language and literature at the University of Michigan will teach "Silent Spots in Torah" 7-8 p.m. These lec- tures will focus on the nature of narrative in Torah. Rabbi David Feder will teach "Modern Ethical Dilemmas: What Would the Prophets Say" 8-9 p.m. Rabbi Feder will examine the state of the world in the last decade of the 20th century through the eyes of the classical Hebrew Prophets. Rabbi Joseph Gutmann, professor of art history, Wayne State University, will teach "The Art of the Bible" 8-9 p.m. Students will learn how art reflects the Bible throughout Jewish history. Dr. Ralph Williams, lec- turer at the University of Michigan, will teach "The Christian Bible for Jewish Readers" 8-9 p.m. Dr. Williams will focus on the ways in which different movements expressed and struggled to appropriate the meaning of their Jewish heritage.
