l LOCAL NEWS I mml B"H 0401, Irfr BAIS CHABAD OF WEST iniuniummi4 BLOOMFIELD Shir Shalom Joins Mazon Temple Shir Shalom of West Bloomfield enrolled last month as a "partner- congregation" of Mazon: A Jewish Response to Hunger. It brings to nearly 700 the number of Conservative, Or- thodox, Reconstructionist and Reform congregations throughout the country, in- cluding 11 in Detroit, that conduct appeals for Mazon during Passover and the High Holy Days and otherwise help raise funds for Mazon's pro- grams to combat hunger at home and abroad. Mazon is the Hebrew word for sustenance. Founded in 1985, Mazon asks Jewish families celebrating a joyous event — a wedding, a bar or bat mitz- vah, a birthday or an anniver- sary — to add a self-imposed 3 percent tax to the cost of the function and contribute it to Mazon for the fight against hunger. The funds raised are given to established agencies, irrespective of denomination, that feed poor people throughout the world. When Mazon made its first grants four years ago, the allocations totalled $20,000. Mazon's allocations for 1991 exceeded $1.28 million. Grants are made to Jewish and non-Jewish anti-hunger groups, here and abroad. Extends our warmesst congratulations to our four couples who are engaged to be married AKIVA BORIN DR.
