Both will feature violin virtuoso Yosef Yankelev, with piano accompanist Jeffrey Jamner. Mr. Yakelev, born in Vilna, Soviet Lithuania, is a Julliard graduate whose career includes appearances in the United States and abroad as a soloist and as the founding first violinist with the Naumburg award- winning New World String Quartet. The first event, "An Even- ing with Yosef Yankelev," is presented by the Temple Emanu-El 40th Anniversary Committee, and will begin with an 8:30 p.m. concert, followed by a champagne and dessert buffet. There is a charge. The Sunday concert, spon- sored by Temple Sisterhood and the Beverly Gold Memorial Fund, will feature Mr. Yankelev and Mr. Jamner performing selections for the young and young at heart at 12:30 p.m., with refreshments following the performance. Weiss will conduct holiday services 8 p.m. Sept. 8 in the non- sectarian Meditation Room on the first floor of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, 900 Wood- ward Avenue, Pontiac. Rabbi Weiss' sermon will be entitl- ed "Matters of Life and Death." Rabbi Weiss will conduct the Rosh Hashanah morning service 10 a.m. Sept. 9. Rabbi Bergman Rabbi Bergman Appointed Rabbi Aaron Bergman, a former resident of Oak Park, has been appointed rabbi at Beth Abraham Hillel Moses Synagogue, where he will share rabbinical duties with Rabbi A. Irving Schnipper. He will also serve as rabbi-in- residence at Hillel Day School. - Rabbi Bergman attended the University of Michigan and is a recent graduate of the Jewish Theological Seminary. Sukkah Builders At Adat Shalom Adat Shalom Synagogue will hold its second annual "Great Sukkah Build-Off" 1 p.m. Sept. 15. Practical sug- gestions will be offered for first-time sukkah construc- tors, as well as for experienc- ed builders. Participants will watch the construction of an easy-to- build sukkah and will take home plans, complete with decorating suggestions and even recipes for sukkah snacks. The program is co- sponsored by the Synagogue's Adult Study Commission and Men's Club. It is open to the community at no charge. Maggie Feldman is chairing the event. < Temple Beth El Feeds The Hungry Temple Beth El members will observe Yom Kippur this year by inserting a check made out to Gleaners Com- munity Food Bank into an envelope, attaching the envelope with a rubber band to a can of food and depositing their donation in specially designated containers outside the sanctuary. . The checks will be used by Gleaners to purchase and distribute food to 184 member agencies in 60 communities. c—'
