We are excited
to announce
the new location of
Swidler Exhibits
For Tea Lovers
Swidler Gallery will open
their 1991-92 season with two
exhibitions for the tea lover.
Eighty artists-craftsmen from
the U.S. and Canada will pre-
sent their historically based
and innovative implements
for tea in "The Expressive
Teapot," third annual invita-
tional and "Steeping Matters:
The Metal Tea Infuser.'
This first hollowware ex-
hibition continues through
Oct. 12.
"The Expressive Teapot"
will explore a range of
aesthetic and intellectual
perspectives, from abstraction
to representation, from whim-
sical visual one-liners to
heartfelt social-political
satire. Many of the teapots
will fulfill their utilitarian
function well, while others
manipulate their functional
beginnings to new points of
departure.
"Steeping Matters: The
Metal Tea Infuser" is a
delight as metalsmiths pre-
sent their version of this
useable but rarely created ob-
ject. Within its scale, one can
enjoy the visual and tactile
qualities of its form and the
beauty of its movable parts
while unfolding the objects'
theme.
Swidler Gallery is located
at 308 West Fourth Street in
the Washington Square Plaza
in downtown Royal Oak.
Gallery hours are Tues.-Sat.
11 a.m.-5 p.m. or by appoint-
ment. For information, call
the gallery, 542-4880.
Art Historian
Gives Lectures
Art historian Michael Far-
rell will lecture for six slide
lectures beginning 7:30 p.m.
Sept. 10 at the Swidler
Gallery.
This lecture series will in-
vestigate the artistic careers
of artists whose works
reflected the times they lived
in: Giotto, Botticelli,
Michelangelo, Raphael, El
Greco and Antonio Canova.
For information and
registration, call the Gallery,
542-4880.
Despite the Crusader pro-
hibition on Jews residing in
Jerusalem, one Jew was not
deterred. In 1140 the
Spanish-born poet and
philosopher Yehuda Halevi
set out for Jerusalem via
Cairo. According to legend,
he was within sight of the
city walls when an Arab
horseman trampled him to
death.
