ou might just think
that the town of Arad
in Israel (pop. 14,000)
is at the crossroads of the
world by some of the sights
here. But if you were to fly
above the town, perhaps in
one of the many huge hot-air
balloons which participate in
the international Arad
Festival every July, you would
see that Arad is actually in
the middle of nowhere, sur-
rounded on all sides by the
Judean and Negev deserts.
This morning I went to do
my weekly shopping at the
large supermarket in the
center of town. Some very tall
people, speaking German and
wearing sleeveless tops, were
walking down an aisle. Out-
side the store a cool, brisk
February wind was blowing.
True, the sun was shining,
but it was to my taste still
rather chilly. For these
Europeans though, who pro-
bably left snow-covered
ground back home, it was
mid-summer. A few minutes
later I saw some people in
shorts. No surprise — they
were speaking some Scandin-
avian-sounding language.
I walked over to the cereal
shelves to buy some granola.
___ Three shelves were crammed
full with a vast assortment of
large cereal boxes, with
American names.
Of course, there was peanut
butter for the taking, chunky-
style or regular, and on the
way out, by the cashier, I
threw a large bag of M & M's
into my cart. At home I
studied the package. The can-
dy was manufactured in
Australia and judging by the
Chinese and Japanese
writing, destined for export to
those countries. Addresses in
Singapore and Malaysia were
also noted. On top of all this,
a label in Hebrew was glued
and a certification of kashrut.
Why would a store in the
middle of nowhere have such
a stock?
First of all, there is an in-
stitute here called WU.J.S.
(World Union of Jewish
Students). Students come
from all corners of the globe
to study the Hebrew
language and courses like the
history of Israel, Zionism, and
F
Judaism.
Second, Arad is a very live-
ly center of tourism. Those

who wish to enjoy the many
advantages of the Dead Sea
find Arad a perfect head-
quarters. Via the minibuses
which leave every hour and
the many taxis and
limousines, a tourist reaches
the Dead Sea in about 20
minutes.
Arad is 600 meters above
sea level, 1,000 meters above
the Dead Sea, and, therefore,
much cooler than down below.
The Dead Sea boasts its
special black mud, rich with
healthful mineral substances,
which the natives and
tourists alike smear all over
their bodies. There also are
many spas offering a full
range of health services. The
German Health Services, for
example, pays for its citizens
suffering from psoriasis and
other skin disorders to come

sides by deserts.

to the Dead Sea. The curing
waters and mud of the Dead
Sea are mentioned in the
Bible.

Arad has a number of ac-
commodations for persons
suffering from asthma. The
air and climate are supposed
to be the best in Israel, dry
and free from pollution, in-
dustrial and natural. A
homeowner isn't allowed to
plant anything he wants in
his garden; only certain
flowers and bushes appear on
an approved list.
Tourists find that with Arad
as their base, many historical
sites and natural wonders are
at hand: the Roman fortress
at Masada; notorious Sodom
and the nearby salt mines;
the ancient ruins at Mam-
shit; the acropolis and burial
cave at Avdat; Kibbutz Sde
Boker where Israel's first
prime minister, Ben-Gurion,
is buried and his house kept
as a museum; the numerous
nature reserves full of wadis,
oases, and steep canyons; the
caves along the Dead Sea
where the Dead Sea Scrolls
were found; the biblical and
modern town of Beer-Sheba;
the oasis of Ein-Gedi; the
Grand Canyon-like craters of
Ramon.
And if you are visiting here,
you'll have no trouble finding
someone who speaks your
language, be it French, Span-
ish, German, English, Rus-
sian, Amharic or Yiddish.
