Aliyah Costs
Are Rising

In 1991 Israel is spending
six billion dollars, which is 20
percent of the country's
budget to absorb new im-
migrants. The Israeli citizens
are shouldering most of the
costs.
As to Ethiopian newcomers,
60 percent of the 14,200 olim
who have just arrived are 18
or under; 25 percent are 19 to
45; 7.5 percent are 46-59; 7.5
percent are 60 or over.
In the youngest age group
the majority are males. Due
to historical reasons such as
war and disease, and typical
of other immigrants, there is
a large number of women in
the 19- to 45-year-old age
group. Consequently, there
are many single-parent
families.
A new Soviet law is causing
a bottleneck for Soviet
newcomers. Since July 1 all
Soviet Jews are required to
apply for passports rather
than exit visas in order to
leave the country. Delays in
issuing the passports have
already cut down on aliyah.
About 50 percent of new
Soviet immigrants are ex-
pected to switch professions
temporarily or permanently.
Approximately 40 percent of
Soviet Jews who made aliyah
in the 1970s also switched
professions.

MDA Increases
Paramedics

Jerusalem — The great in-
flux of Ethiopian and Soviet
Jews will increase the
demands for emergency
medical service throughout
Israel. Ib help ameliorate this
problem, Magen David Adom
(MDA) is increasing the
number of paramedics. MDA
graduated 12 new MDA para-
medics who will join the team
of 190 MDA paramedics who
man the MDA Mobile Inten-
sive Care Ambulances
(MICUs) throughout Israel.

Soldiers Give
To Blood Drive

Tel Aviv — The Israeli
Defense Forces (IDF) and
Magen David Adom (MDA)
are combining efforts to build
up a "blood inventory" for
time of emergency. MDA will
work with each IDF unit to
conduct a semi-annual blood
donation drive.
According to General Staff
orders, all soldiers are entitl-
ed to an additional 24-hour
leave for their contribution of
blood as well as credit in their
"behavior file."
