/—

We are witnessing — where
there had been repression —
the resurgence of Jewish
vitality in Eastern Europe.
May these communities gain
new strength and success in
their endeavors.
We are witnessing through
Operation Exodus, an out-
pouring of compassion and
generosity for all Jews in need.
May we be thankful for our
religious freedom and the
ability and opportunity to ex-
tend help to others.
Now, on this Rosh
Hashanah, as we once again
dip our apples into honey, we
recite the age-old words of our
tradition. May we enlarge our
horizons, pledging to ourselves
that this year we will do even
more to reach out to Jews in
distress, wherever they may be.
Kol Yis-ra-el ah-ray-vim zeh
bazeh — All Israel is respon-
sible for one another.
This year may all Jews
know a new measure of
sweetness.
May each of us continue to
grow in our commitment to
our people and our faith.

Ye-hi ra-tzon mil-fa-ne-ha,
Ah-do-noy Eh-lo-hay-nu vay-
lo-hay a-vo-tay-nu,
she-te-ha-desh ah-lay-nu
sha-nah to-vah u-me-tu-kah.
May it be your will, 0 Lord
our God and God of our
ancestors, to renew for us a
good and a sweet year.
Responsive reading before
the shofar service:
The sound of the Shofar
challenges us this year once
again to link ourselves with
our people:
to hear the voices of Ethi-
pian Jewish children, as they
play in their new homes in
Israel
to feel the yearnings of Soviet
Jews, as they step off the
planes landing each day at
Ben Gurion Airport
to know — deep in our souls
— that Israel really gives new
life to Jews in distress.
Our tradition teaches us
that to save a human being is
the greatest possible mitzvah.
But the responsibility does
not end there:

it continues — in the houses
which must now be built
in the jobs which must now
be created
in the education which must
now be provided.
In all these ways — and so
many more — Israel needs our
help, our compassion, our
understanding and our sup-
port of Operation Exodus.
In ancient Israel, the Shofar
was used to bring our people
together for a shared destiny.
As the Shofar is blown to-
day, may it bring us together
in acts of love and commit-
ment for our people. ❑
