. • A New Chef, ; . A New Menu, Col. Picquart launched an independent investigation, and although court- martialed and imprisoned himself, played a key role in ultimately proving Captain Dreyfus' innocence. "Picquart was a Catholic aristocrat and a classic anti- Semite," Richard Dreyfuss told an audience of film and television critics recently. "He personally disliked Dreyfus, yet he was able to step away from his past and his social class and risk his career to defend a Jew. Everybody else in L'Affaire Dreyfus behaved in predic- table ways. Picquart was the only one who crossed over." Although the actor is probably not related to the French army captain, the similarity in names, as well as the Jewish aspect, has fueled Mr. Dreyfuss' lifelong interest in the case. As the film's co-producer, he has been trying to get the project produced for 10 years. He is a fan of two earlier Hollywood movies about the case, The Life of Emile Zola with Paul Muni and I Accuse with Jose Ferrer. But Mr. Dreyfuss said he found the character of Lt. Col. Pic- quart more fascinating than that of Mr. Zola or Captain Dreyfus. One of Hollywood's most outspoken and involved Jews, the actor said the Dreyfus case was one inci- dent in "the long, sorry tra- dition of anti-Semitism that sees the Jew as alien and suspect of double loyalty." He said he sees differing echoes of the case in both the Watergate and Jonathan Pollard affairs. Theodor Herzl covered the trial as a newspaper cor- respondent and was so shocked by the prevalence of anti-Semitism in "civilized" France that he turned from an assimilated Jew to a become the founder of modern Zionism. But Mr. Herzl won't even have a walk-on part in Prisoners of Honor. "I already played Herzl as a nine-year old at the Jewish Community Center," the actor quipped. The 90-minute film was shot entirely in England under the direction of Ken Russell. The Anglo- American cast includes Ol- iver Reed, Peter Firth, Jeremy Kemp and Brian Blessed, with Kenneth Col- ley as Captain Dreyfus. It will be shown first on the Home Box Office (HBO) cable system in November and probably will be releas- ed as a theatrical film in Europe and Israel in 1992. 0 Jack and Gary Cochran and The Staff Of Beau Jacks Food & Spirits Wish Their Friends and Customers A Healthy and Happy New Year t4 741 Wholp Neir EXperienCeir • - • f.= "Innfield's Restaurant unveiled 0 •0 its new look and fresh food menu di four weeks ago, and on both scores, ,,IT'S A WINNER" MOLLY ABRAHAM Detroit Free Press * ra4;ing buy te casual dining • spirits 548-0288 4108 W.
