Deborah, Golda and Me:
Being Female and Jewish in
America, by Letty Cot-
tin Pogrebin, draws on the
author's feminist perspective
as she writes about the
tension between Jewish and
black women, Israel's treat-
ment of women, and anti-Se-
mitism in the women's move-
ment (Crown, September).
At the opposite end of the
spectrum is Lynn Davidman's
Tradition in a Rootless World
(University of California, Oc-
tober), which follows several
young women who returned
to Orthodox Judaism and ex-
plores their motives.
Saving Remnants: Feeling
Jewish in America (Mac-
millan, September), a col-
laboration by Sara Bershtel
and Allen Graubard, looks at
the rise in intermarriage, the
drop in synagogue atten-
dance, and new forms of
Jewish expression, such as
New Age spirituality and gay
temples. Being gay or lesbian
and Jewish also concerns the
various essayists in Twice
Blessed (Beacon, available
now).
A more far-reaching — and
scholarly — consideration of
identity is After Tragedy and
(Cambridge,
Triumph
available now). In several
essays, author Michael Beren-
baum addresses Jewish iden-
tity in the first genera-
tion born after the Holocaust,
examining the tensions be-
tween those who were vic-
tims and those who are em-
powered.
Peter Sichrovsky weighs in
with Abraham's Children
(Pantheon, November), a col-
lection of interviews with 25
young Israeli men and
women, encompassing their
varied backgrounds, hopes
and responses to the central
question of Palestinian self-
determination.
In a category by itself is the
second installment of Art
Speigelman's Maus: A Sur-
vivor's Tale, And Here My
Troubles Began (Pantheon,
November), an allegory based
on Spiegelman's parents'
struggle to survive the
Holocaust. Illustrated like a
comic book, Mr. Spiegelman's
unsettling history-memoir
protrays Jews as mice, Ger-
mans as cats, and Poles as
pigs.
Francine Prince's New
Jewish Cuisine (Putnam's,
August) includes classic
recipes for low-fat, low-salt,
low-sugar versions of holiday
dishes, exotic recipes from
Chinese-Jewish and Italian-
Jewish cultures. ❑
