the Nature Reserves Authori-
ty, the Sea of Galilee Manage-
ment Board and neighboring
settlements.
Some of the central features
of the scheme are a minor
diversion, via a pipeline and
canal, of a small part of the
Jordan River's flow of water
into a 12.5 acre artificial set-
tling pond (to remove any par-
ticles of silt from the- water)
that will be formed by the
erection of a small earthern
dam at a suitable site
alongside the Jordan River.
This, ogether with the river's
natural fall, will create a 33
meter head of water which
will power a turbogenerator.
The diverted water will then
be returned to the Jordan a
little further downstream and
will not detract from the
country's water reserves or
from the Jordan's natural
flow.
Some objections have been
heard from the Society for the
Protection of Nature, which
wants this section of the Jor-

dan Valley kept in its present
almost natural state. The kib-
butz, however, insists that the
area's present state will be
preserved. Only 1.6 kilome-
ters of the 15 kilometer sec-
tion will be affected and the
generator itself will be lo-
cated half-underground. Kib-
butz manager Michael Doari
also points out that "the
presence of the small dam
will attract more birds than
ever before."
The amount of water to be
used will be less than the Jor-
dan's recorded minimum flow,
so that the river will never
dry up as a result of extrac-
ting an excess of water. The
electricity generated (some
13.5 million kilowatts an-
nually) will be sold to the
Israel Electric Corporation
which will inject it into
Israel's National Grid and the
kibbutz will continue to buy
its electricity from the Elec-
tric Corporation for a special
price. In this way it hopes to
recover its investment within
five years.
Adds Mr. Doari, "This ven-
turesome initiative will
benefit all concerned and will
also be a contribution by Kfar
Hanassi, ever-ready to try the
unusual, in the fight against
pollution of the atmosphere
by fossil-fueled generated
electricity."
