Color- ful flowers and trees are naturally intertwined with these ancient fruits, and like Ein Kerem itself, represent the blending of antiquity with modernity. At the end of the village's main road stands the imposing red gate of the Notre Dame of Zion Convent. Ringing the doorbell, visitors are met by Sister Andreia, who immediately espouses a 10 minute mini-history of the convent. Once an orphanage, the convent now houses 14 nuns, some of whom speak Hebrew. In contrast to the timelessness of the Christian sites, Ein Kerem's modern history is very much a part of Jerusalem. In 1948 a skir- mish with the Arab residents of the village resulted in most of them leaving. New im- migrants from Morocco, Poland, Hungary and Yemen then settled in the village making it a true cultural melting pot. In 1967, Mayor Teddy Kollek decided to rejuvenate Ein Kerem, while at the same time establishing an artist colony in Jerusalem. So began the gentrification of Ein Kerem. Now lawyers, doc- tors, journalists and artists live side-by-side with nuns, priests and monks and hid- den behind the old stone buildings, are elegant homes doubling as art galleries and studios. Yitzhak Greenfield, origin- ally from New York, is an ar- tist who settled in Ein Kerem 20 years ago. His prints reflect the peacefulness of Ein Kerem, and are deeply inter- woven with religious sym- bolism. His work has been in- ternationally displayed and he has permanent collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. "Ein Kerem is like no other place I've been," he says, "It's unspoiled, with people of all religions living together without tension.' Ruth and Etienne Debel have operated an art gallery since 1973. "We sell artists' work to museums in Israel and abroad, and many people come to Ein Kerem for the sole purpose of visiting the gallery," she says. When ask- ed why she chose Ein Kerem and not the fashionable art section of Tel Aviv for her prestigious gallery, she replied, "Ein Kerem is very special.
