NATE, SARA & ABEL FEINSTEIN Los Angeles, CA Worlds Meet In Ein Kerem LISA SAMIN Special to The Jewish News N estled in the Jerusa- lem forest lies a quaint village seem- ingly untouched by moderni- ty. Ein Kerem, one of the holiest Christian sites in the world and home of Jerusalem's first established artist colony, is just eight kilometers west of the hectic pace of downtown Jerusalem. Called "The City of Judah" in the New Testament, Ein Kerem is the birthplace of John the Baptist. Throughout this village, whose residents are predominantly Jewish, the bells of St. John the Bap- tist's Church ring regularly, while Christian pilgrims are an integral part of the village's special character. Built in 1674, the Church is quite elaborate. Huge silver candlesticks and gold icons bask in the colorful rays cast by the stained glass windows, and a mosaic inscribed with the words "Hail 0 Martyrs of God," from the First Byzan- tine Chapel, greets visitors at the Church's entrance. Also displayed are remnants from the Byzantine, Herodian, Mamaluk and Turkish periods, which were found on the Church's site. In sharp contrast is the Church of the Visitation, towering gracefully above the surrounding cypress trees and offering a panoramic view of the Jerusalem hills. It is here that Mary, the mother of Jesus, upon being told by the Angel Gabriel of John's birth, came to visit the child's mother, Elizabeth, where she joyfully recited the Magnifi- cant, a hymn of thanksgiving to God. Today, on the far wall of the Church's courtyard, the Magnificant can be found in- scribed in 45 different languages, each one set in a colorful frame depicting a biblical scene. In keeping with Ein Kerem's unique religious pluralism, Mary's well, a spring used by Mary for cleansing, flows beneath a Moslem mosque, and in the distance is the Russian church, Maskobiya, its brick red steeple joining the steeples of the other two chur- ches in distinguishing Ein Kerem's skyline. At the outskirts of the village, one could easily con- clude that the ancient Garden of Eden still exists, for here the seven fruits of the Bible flourish — olives, figs, wheat, grapes, barley, dates and
