IRVING & PEARL WEINGARDEN PAULA & MARCUS LAST MR. & MRS. SIMON LEFKOWITZ ROSALYN & HARVEY MEYER BARRY, JEFFREY, MARLENE & STEVE 1111D11 1111Z Mtn life are portrayed in a series of lifelike tableaux. The open- ing exhibit is a Bedouin tent woven from sheep and goat hair, divided into separate men's and women's areas. The female mannequin is seen at her household tasks while the man is preparing the traditional coffee with which to welcome his guests. In the strictly patriarchal Bedouin society, only an adult male of authority can perform the coffee ceremony, an im- portant ritual in hospitality. The grinding of the coffee beans, in a special mortar, is done in a distinctive rhythm, so everyone knows that coffee is being prepared. Bedouin women do virtual- ly all the work connected to the household, including shepherding the flocks, weav- ing clothing and rugs and gathering and preparing food, some of which are displayed in the exhibit. A life-sized model of a "wedding camel," bedecked with woven saddle bags, rugs and coins, which a generation ago used to carry Bedouini brides to the wed- ding tent, is one of the most striking exhibits in the museum. Other displays include a col- lection of ingenious make- shift toys made out of odds and ends found in the desert: pieces of wood, soft-drink bot- tle caps, de-fanged barbed wire; and a model of a sheikh's tomb, a holy place in the desert which always in- cludes a guest room for pass- ersby, supplied with coffee, sugar and basic foods. The Bedouin Museum is part of a larger complex, the Joe (Yosef) Alon Regional and Folklore Center, named for the veteran Israeli pilot who showed great interest in the region and its inhabitants. Mr. Alon was murdered under mysterious circumstances while serving as Israeli military attache in Wash- ington in 1972. The Center was established by Kibbutz Lahav whose members, devotees of desert life, decid- ed to pool their collections of archaeological and Bedouin artifacts in order to set up the museum. A sizable number of items on display are part of the wide-ranging private col- lection donated by anthro- poligist Dina Goren, the museum's first curator, who lived in the Sinai for many years and had close ties to the Bedouin there. Many of the Bedouin themselves have con- tributed family heirlooms to the museum. ❑ World Zionist Press Service to all our friends and relatives.
