"Executive Series"
Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel
and Albania agreed Aug. 19
to establish diplomatic rela-
tions for the first time.
A hard-line Marxist state
when Israel was founded in
1948, Albania did not follow
the Soviet Union and other
Communist bloc countries in
recognizing Israel.
A protocol to establish ties
was signed in Jerusalem by
Israeli Foreign Minister
David Levy and his visiting
Albanian counterpart,
Muhamet Kapllani.
It was signed as a military
coup in the Soviet Union
swept President Mikhail
Gorbachev from power.
But Kapllani said, "I
believe that the democratic
process is something that
cannot be stopped in the
Soviet Union." The two
countries plan to exchange
ambassadors, although it is
unlikely that Israel will
open an embassy in Tirana,
the Albanian capital. In-
stead, Israel's ambassador to
neighboring Italy will prob-
ably serve as ambassador to
Albania.
Albania has a population
of about 3.2 million, smaller
than Israel's and mostly
Moslem, a holdover from
centuries of Turkish rule in
the Balkans. The Albanians
have only recently been
permitted to worship openly
in a country that has been
avowedly atheistic.
In April, as the Marxist
dictatorship in Tirana
crumbled, more than 300
Albanian Jews were brought
to Israel by airlift, virtually
the entire Jewish population
of Albania.
Neighboring Yugoslavia is
now the only Eastern Euro-
pean country apart from the
Soviet Union that has no
diplomatic relations with
Israel.
Israeli Beer
Up In Space?
Tel Aviv (JTA) — A Soviet
cosmonaut has ordered
Israeli beer for his next trip
into space.
Alexander Soroborov de-
veloped a taste for the local
brew on a visit to Israel six
months ago. He asked for
several bottles to take on his
next mission, in a letter he
sent to Ruti Weinstein of the
Haifa Tourist Development
Association.
Weinstein, Soroborov's
host on his visit to Haifa,
had two bottles sent to the
cosmonaut's Moscow home.
