War II, Kenya received an
influx of Eastern European
Jews fleeing the Nazis.
The Nairobi Jewish com-
munity reached its peak in
the 1950s with a new syn-
agogue building and a full-
time rabbi. During the same
decade, the president of the
board of Kenya Jewry, Israel
Somen, was elected mayor of
Nairobi. In 1968, the com-
munity set up a Hebrew Aid
Society and a Chevra
Kadisha (burial society).
"At its height, the Jewish
community had several
thousand families," Dr.
Blumenthal said. "We know
because there was perma-
nent seating in the shul at
that time, and the family
nameplates are still on the
pews.
Today, the Nairobi Jewish
community contains 250 to
300 families. Nairobi's Jews,
with an average age of 40,
can be divided into four
groups: the old colonial
British, Israelis, Europeans
who fled the Holocaust, and
expatriate Americans and
Canadians.
"Day-to-day life in Africa
is not expensive and the
standard of living is pretty
good," Dr. Blumenthal said.
"Many of the Israelis are in-
volved in pharmaceuticals
and construction, and they
can have a higher standard
of living in Kenya than they
could in Israel. However,
many do return home. One
of the rules of this continent
is that as much as you fall in
love with Africa, it is unlike-
ly that Africa will fall in love
with you."
The community has a once
a week Israeli school and
conducts bar and bat mitz-
vah classes in addition to
seminars on the Talmud.
Last year, there were four or
five bar or bat mitzvahs and
three britot (ritual circumci-
sions).
Although there is no
kosher butcher or baker in
Nairobi, many in the com-
munity keep kosher homes
and try to follow the dietary
laws.
"The congregation brings
in a shochet every so often
who slaughters a few hun-
dred chickens and cows, and
everyone stocks their
freezers with them," Dr.
Blumenthal explained.
"Also, a lot of supplies are
imported from Israel."
To bring Nairobi's Jews
together, the synagogue
hosts a community dinner on
Erev Rosh Hashanah and
large, festive celebrations on
Chanukah and Purim.
"The parties tend to get
pretty wild," he said. "We

Would You Pay
$395 To
Keep Him Out?

Everyone has a home security system—leaving the
lights on and locking the deadbolt. Yet one in four
American homes is victimized by crime, and Justice
Dept. statistics reveal that most break-ins occur during
daylight hours. Yesterday's security measures just aren't
enough. Deadbolts and lightbulbs can't call the police
in case of a break-in.

ADT Security Systems Can.

There's a reason ADT Security Systems helps protect
more Fortune 500 companies, small businesses and
homes than any other security company in the world:

ADT helps protect your home and business.

When you're shopping for a security system, call ADT.
Compare the differences. For only $395, ADT will help
protect your home and family better than anyone.
