Message To Bush
Another terrifying chapter
in anti-Semitism gained at-
tention during the visit of
President Bush in the
Ukraine last month. The
president's comments on and
condemnation of what oc-
curred 50 years ago in Babi
Yar was another indictment
of the Nazi terrors and the
encouragements they
received from Hitlerite
collaborators.
The president's speech was
a moving rejection of all in-
humanities akin to the Nazi
barbarities when 100,000
Jews were buried alive at
Babi Yar. The Bush speech
did not mention the guilt
traced to Ukranians. and the
failure to provide accounts of
the tragedy. That guilt was
cause for many disputes en-
gineered by Ukranians. A
historic document exists,
written by the Russian poet
Yevgeni Yevtushenko, ex-
posing the Babi Yar horror
and at the same time con-
demning anti-Semitism.
President Bush would
have gained a longer lasting
place among opponents of
anti-Jewish prejudices had
he mentioned the Yev-
tushenko outrage. The pres-

ident did mention Yev-
tushenko but it was in such a
generalized way that one
would never imagine that he
was writing against anti-
Semitism.
Yevtushenko's long poem,
which first appeared in a
translation by Abe Goldberg
in the Jewish Standard of
Toronto, Jan. 1962, becomes
an important contribution to
the battle exposing anti-
Semitism.
The following concluding
portion of the Yevtushenko
poem will surely always be
among the powerful literary
weapons against hatreds:
Let joy proclaim
The burial and the shame
Of the last anti-Semite
Anywhere.
No Jewish blood in my
blood flows
But hated by every anti-
Semite in
The loathing detestation
Grows, as if I were a Jew.
This, their venom, their
wild
hatred of me
Proclaims that I
Am a
Russian.
Truth and vigilance
against bigotries must be
predominant for us and for
mankind. It is good that
President Bush called atten-
tion to and condemned the
Babi Yar horrors. The Yev-
tushenko poem must con-
tinue as a way of exposing
the terrorists. This is the
way of preserving human
decencies. ❑

Growing numbers of persons are becoming more athletic and exercise-
minded. An age-old side effect of sports and exercise, however, are exercise-
related injuries. Most doctors see more exercise-related injuries than ever before.
The increase in injuries, however, should be kept in perspective. Most in-
juries are treatable, many are preventable and the benefits of exercise almost
always outweigh the negative side of injury.
The nature of treatment of sport and exercise-related injury is changing.
One of the most significant changes in recent years is the emergence of
chiropractors as important providers of care to the injured athletes and exer-
ciser. A recent issue of the medical journal "Clinics in Sports Medicine" at-
tributes the increased interest in chiropractic treatment for athletes to the
high incidence of spinal injuries in sports and exercise, and the success reported by many athletes with
this type of treatment.
The goal should be for all persons to participate in sports or exercise on a regular basis. However
a side effect of this goal will be injuries, and commonly, they will be to the spine. Chiropractic treat-
ment is very effective to the injured athlete, returning many to their previous participation level.
Our office takes great pride in providing the best care available for those who have sports and exercise-
related injuries.

Settlement Expands
On West Bank

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
compound of the old bus sta-
tion in central Hebron will
soon serve as dormitory
buildings for students of the
nearby Shavei Hebron
yeshiva, Danny Naveh,
media adviser to Defense
Minister Moshe Arens an-
nounced.
The bus station was con-
fiscated by the army several
years ago, following a ter-
rorist attack. The buses were
relocated away from the
center of the predominantly
Arab West Bank city.
For years, the army has
resisted pressures by Jewish
settlers to expand the Jew-
ish Quarter of Hebron. This
latest decision creates a ter-
ritorial continuum of Jewish
settlement from the Jewish
Quarter to the heart of the
Arab section of the city.
Local Palestinians said the

army's move was a reprisal
for the stabbing of a resident
of the Jewish Quarter last
week. They charged that the
army once again has bent to
the will of Jewish extremists
in the city.

In another development,
the Defense Ministry con-
firmed reports that 15
families have been allowed
to settle in Eshkolot, a
military post held until now
by a paramilitary Nahal
unit.

Eshkolot is located in the
Hebron Mountains, south of
the city of Hebron. The set-
tlers are being housed in
mobile homes, which were
brought from Kiryat Arba.
Mr. Arens' media adviser
said the post was turned into
a civilian settlement on the
basis of a Cabinet decision
made as long ago as 1983.
