NJ Upholds
Jewish Court

New York (JTA) — The
New Jersey Supreme Court
has ruled that since the
Elmora Hebrew Center in
Elizabeth, N.J., agreed to
submit a dispute with its
rabbi to a beit din (rab-
binical court), it cannot now
ask a civil court to nullify
the beit din's decision.
The dispute, which
centered around the con-
gregation's rabbi, Yale
Fishman, involved allega-
tions that Rabbi Fishman
had fraudulently altered his
employment contract, di-
verted synagogue money for
his own use and neglected
his synagogue duties.
He was fired by the con-
gregation's board of trustees
in 1986, one year after the
majority of the board voted
to give him a second three-
year contract.
Rabbi Fishman refused to
leave, claiming the
dismissal invalid, and re-
mained in the synagogue-
owned home. The congrega-
tion then filed a civil suit.
The civil court referred the
matter to a beit din.
Although the synagogue ap-
pealed that ruling and lost,
the state court noted that
the synagogue did not ap-
peal further.
All of the charges leveled
against Rabbi Fishman were
dismissed by the beit din,
which ruled in November
1987 that "for the sake of
peace," Rabbi Fishman'
should voluntarily resign
and be paid $100,000 in
damages.

Israeli Team
To Play L.A.

Los Angeles (JTA) — Mac-
cabi Tel Aviv, Israel's
perennial national basket-
ball champions, will play
two games against the Los
Angeles Clippers this fall —
Oct. 24 in San Diego and
Oct. 27 at the Los Angeles
Sports Arena.
Maccabi has faced three
other NBA teams in the past
three years: the Los Angeles
Lakers, the Miami Heat and
the Philadelphia 76ers.
Tal Brody, Maccabi's liai-
son with the NBA, said last
week that Maccabi would
field a stronger team than
the one that lost to the
Lakers 129-106 last year.
He noted that Maccabi,
which has twice won the Eu-
ropean Cup championship,
came in a strong third this
year, despite being forced to
play all its games on the
road during the Persian Gulf
war.
