distinguishing between the
tolerant and unabashedly
Zionist Orthodoxy of, say,
Yeshiva University and the
narrower Orthodoxy of the
haredim, who oppose a
Zionist state.
Whether or not the
Chafets articles shed light
on such differences, or simp-
ly added heat to the long-
burning dispute over the
place, and shadings, of Or-
thodoxy in Israel, is still an
open question.
There is no Shulchan
Aruch for Jewish Jour-
nalism, no guide to the
perplexed on when to pro-
voke debate and when to
hold back. An editor can
only rely on his instincts, his
journalistic kishkas.
In this case, there was
honest disagreement among
editors over whether the
Chafets articles clarified the
issues or blurred them even
more. ❑

Budapest Mayor
Rejects Jibe
Budapest (JTA) — Mayor
Gabor Demszky of Budapest
has rejected a complaint
with anti-Semitic overtones
by a popular writer and
member of Parliament.
In fact, the mayor said he
would bring legal action
against Istvan Csurka, who
is a leading figure in the
Hungarian Democratic
Forum, the country's
0•0
strongest political party.
Mr. Csurka publicly
criticized a Sunday morning
radio program called "The
I. Mayor's Office" for favoring
a plan to allow the Yad
Vashem Holocaust museum
in Jerusalem to conduct
research at the Hungarian
National Archive.
He complained that it was
being given preference over
the Central Office of Com-
pensation, for which no
space was made available at
the archive.
Mr. Csurka and his party
colleagues have made a
major issue of a recently
passed law to compensate
Hungarians for property na-
tionalized by the former
Communist regime, starting
in 1949.
But the writer-politician
has been accused in the past
of anti-Semitic innuendo. He
has called for freeing the
Hungarian press and other
O• media from so-called
"liberalism," by which he
means Jewish journalists.
Mr. Csurka is believed to
be persona non grata in
Israel.
