For the past decade, Clarence Thomas has been a member of the editorial ad- visory board of the Lincoln Review, the quarterly publica- tion of the Lincoln Institute. The Lincoln Institute is a con- servative black think tank organized by Jay A. Parker, a lobbyist for South Africa. Furthermore, the Lincoln Institute was a part of the Coalition for Peace Through Strength, an umbrella group for a number of extreme anti- Communist organizations in- cluding the Captive Nations Committee. The Captive Na- tions Committee is a group of eastern European emigre anti-communists who have too often been found to be World War II fascist sym- pathizers .. . Jay A. Parker, the founder of Lincoln Institute and the editor of the Review has sere= ed for many years as a member of the Board of the U.S. Branch of the World Anti-Communist League (WACL). WACL is an extreme right-wing organization which has had numerous anti-Semitic and racist af- filiates .. . Jewish community groups need not worry about expen- ding political capital or rein- forcing black anti-Semitism. The Jewish community should join the Congressional Black Caucus and other civil rights groups in opposing the Thomas nomination. Farrakhan is not the issue. Clarence Thomas is not the man to replace Thurgood Marshall. It is unreasonable to expect George Bush to ap- point a liberal to the Court, but we need not accept so- meone as far to the right as Thomas appears to be. Last January, your paper published an article, "Selling Out Israel To Maintain `Peace? " The last paragraph states, "France has a long history of betrayal, diplomatic duplicity and moral cowardice in its international relations. This has extended not only to its dealings with its own Jewish population during World War II and with Israel afterward, but in dealing with the United States." Mr. Rose suggests we not visit France. I suggest we do not purchase anything made or processed in France as well. Ed Kohl Farmington Hills Na'amat Story Is Appreciated I was truly delighted with Elizabeth Applebaum's July 26 article on "Detroit Women Adopt Hundreds of Children." The article really portrayed what Na'amat is all about. I appreciate that Mrs. Ap- plebaum presented our story correctly. Evelyn Noveck President, Greater Detroit Council Na'amat "ImwmIll NEWS Germany Speeds Visas Bonn (JTA) — While Ger- many's Interior Ministry has promised to speed up the processing of visa applica- tions from Soviet Jews seek- ing admission to Germany, no new commitments have been made with respect to numbers, ministry sources said over the weekend. A request to allow more Jews to enter the country was made by Jewish com- munity officials at an emergency meeting with Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaueble last week. The meeting took place shortly after the Aug. 19 military coup by Communist hard-liners threatened a return to authoritarian rule in the Soviet Union. But the urgency of the situation diminished when the coup collapsed two days later. The German Jewish corn- munity, nevertheless, is anxious to see the Jewish population grow. It numbers about 40,000 at present, a far cry from the 600,000 German Jews before World War II, of whom 100,000 liv- ed in Berlin. Several German intellec- tuals have campaigned for free Jewish immigration. They said it would benefit not only the Jewish corn- munity, but German society as a whole. Israeli officials here are opposed. They insist that Israel must be the destina- tion of Jews who leave the Soviet Union. German policy now is to admit Soviet Jews who have relatives in Germany or who can prove family origins in Germany. They must apply for visas at German con- sulates in the Soviet Union.
