We've Got You Covered Goldberg, or our former undersecretary of state, Eugene Rostow. Admittedly, 242 is very loosely for- mulated. But, what 242 lacks in specificity, it more than makes up for in ambiguity. For example, 242 doesn't begin to tell us who were the aggressors in the Six-Day War and who was the victim of aggression. It muddies up the whole question of interna- tional borders and armistice lines. And, it makes no distinction between the forceful acquisition of ter- ritory and the acquisition of territory in a "just war." There are other problems, like the question of sponsor- ship. The Soviet Union which has, almost from the beginn- ing, fueled the Arab-Israeli conflict; the Soviet Union from which tens of thousands of Jews are now fleeing; that Soviet Union is slated to be a co-sponsor of the peace process. The PLO, whose covenant reads like a death warrant for the Jewish state, insist there won't be a minyan without them. The UN also feels that they have a role to play. After all, 10 years of Kurt Waldheim and 16 years of Zionism equals Racism should count for something. Then there is the Bush ad- ministration. After the aban- donment of Lebanon and the betrayal of the Kurds, this peace process must be as com- forting to Yitzhak Shamir as an advanced case of psoriasis. Maybe it's just a typographic error. Maybe what Bush-Baker had in mind all along was a "Piece Process." A piece of Israel to- day and another piece tomor- row and tomorrow and tomorrow. Mitchell Finkel Silver Spring, Md.
