nion in Israel and the United
States.
Second, Ms. Applebaum ap-
plies the term "anti-Israel"
without defining it. Some peo-
ple, who believe Israel's
security requires permanent
Israeli control over the West
Bank and Gaza Strip, do in-
deed consider AFSC to be
anti-Israel because we oppose
the occupation. But we oppose
it not only because military
occupation violates the basic
human and political rights of
the Palestinian people, but
because it is a prescription for
continued conflict and suffer-
ing for Israelis, too.
We believe that Israel's
security rests in peace with
its neighbors, including the
Palestinians, and we believe
that peace will not be achiev-
ed as long as the occupation
continues. In this, too, we are
joined by a majority of Israeli
Jews: a recent survey by the
Guttman Institute found that
69 percent of Israelis are
ready to make territorial con-
cessions as part of a peace
process.
To set the record straight,
the American Friends Service
Committee supports a com-
prehensive settlement of the
Israeli-Palestinian-Arab con-
flict based on the principles of
negotiations for peace,
mutual recognition, mutual
security and self-determina-
tion for both Israelis and
Palestinians. We believe this
position reflects our commit-
ment to nonviolence and our
best hopes for peace for
Israelis, Palestinians and
other people in the Middle
East.

The recent article criticiz-
ing the American Friends
Service Committee ("AFSC:
Such Good Friends?" July 26)
was right on target since it
criticized the major point of
the American Friends. It
labeled the two-state solution
as demagogic in reasoning
and preparatory for the next
war.
In describing the Israel-
"palestine" (sic) concept as
wanting a sponsor, Ms. Apple-
baum found that for one, it
appeals to Jewish people who
are tired of fighting, and are
looking for an easy way out.
If only, say those tired Jews,
the Arabs would take Judea-
Samaria, we Jews and Arabs
would all be better off. But
the truth is, and virtually all

Jews know this, the Arabs
want all of Israel.
If the Arabs accept Judea-
Samaria, they will be ready
at some time to assault the
remainder of Israel. Then it is
war once more between Jew
and Arab — inside of Israel.
Secondly, the present
borders for Israel, including
the territories, actually are
only 20 percent of the original
plan by Great Britain.
Originally, Palestine con-
sisted of land both east and
west of the Jordan River .. .
The plan of American
Friends, the United States
and Great Britain are to en-
force the two-state Israel-
"palestine" plan after all
these years from 1967,
despite that it is Jewish land
and a fraction of the original.
That the Arabs have 21 coun-
tries cuts no ice. The AFSC et.
al. want to give the newly-
created form of Arab, the
"palestinians," their piece of
"palestine," taking it from the
"despised" Jew.
Well, I'm afraid not. After
being in Israel, I can see that
victory in the Six-Day War
was no mistake. The ad-
ministered areas of the 1967
War had no borders, and were
renamed Judea-Samaria as
had been done under the
British Mandate and the Ot-
toman period. They were
again rightfully Israeli. Are
we Jews supposed to see
Israel once more become part-
ly Arab by handing them
back to the Arabs? .. .

Taking Israel
Piece by Piece

The State Department
seems to have a paper pro-
blem. On the eve of the Six-
Day War, they couldn't find a
letter of understanding con-
cerning Israel's right of
passage through the Straits of
Tiran.
The Camp David Accords,
another piece of paper, lost its
salience a long time ago. And
now there is that phantom
letter from Assad, meant for
James Baker's eyes only.
Spurred on by this literal
apparition, Baker shuttled off
to the Middle East informing
everyone that this is the mo-
ment, the historic moment,
we've been waiting for. At
long last, Syria seems to have
discovered the utility of UN
Resolution 242. Never mind
that it has taken them 24
years to do so. And never
mind their reading of 242, a
reading that is hardly consis-
tent with that of its principal
formulators, like our former
UN ambassador, Arthur
