Dershowitz N A T A B L E D A 0 L E R T H E N B E A A B L E D E A L R the American Jewish com- munity." That may or may not be true; we haven't the data to know. But I can say, and do, that if I had to assign my proxy to someone in a leadership position in Jew- ish life, Henry Siegman would be on my very short list of candidates. And now, to make matters worse, Mr. Dershowitz has called on Mr. Siegman to resign — or be dismissed — "so that we (can) all get back to fighting the battle against anti-Semitism rather than conducting a war against fellow Jews who are trying to fight anti-Semitism." The best defense, they say, is a good offense, and if Mr. Der- showitz knows anything, he knows defense. But it rather turns things on their head for him to chastise Mr. Siegman for "conducting a war against fellow Jews" when it is in his own book that the war is declared. Talk about chutzpah! (The root of chutzpah is chatzuf, insolent. Not so incidentally, in the Jewish tradition a court sitting with less than three judges is known as bet din chatzuf. The issue, finally, goes beyond Mr. Dershowitz's misrepresentation of Mr. Siegman or my respect for him. If we allow Henry Siegman to be defined as Israel's enemy, we will one day soon awaken to discover that Israel's only remaining friends are an embarrassing agglomeration of yahoos and know-nothings. Mr. Der- showitz is altogether too smart and too wise to wish that upon us. Yet he has in this instance erred, and grievously, causing private hurt and public damage. Chachamim, hizharu b'divreichem, we are taught: Wise men are under a spe- cial burden to be careful in their words. El NEWS I Kach Activists Taunt Palestinians Jerusalem (JTA) — A pair of activists in the militant Kach movement, one armed with an Uzi submachine gun, managed to enter the Petach Tikva jail last week and menace two Palestinian leaders undergoing inter- rogation. Police Commissioner Ya'acov Terner ordered a high-level investigation into what police sources admit was a serious lapse of securi- ty. But no arrests were made, although the intruders, Tiran Pollack and Baruch Merzel, have long police records and have served time in prison for lawless behavior. Kach, a movement found- ed by the late Rabbi Meir Kahane, advocates the ex- pulsion of all Arabs from Israel and the administered territories. The police station in Petach Tikva serves as na- tional headquarters of the Serious Crimes Division. It was under heavy guard Monday night when Pales- tinian. nationalists Faisal Husseini and Professor Hanan Ashrawi were brought from Jerusalem for questioning. Guards were posted in ad- vance of their arrival, to keep separate demonstrators from the right-wing Moledet and Tehiya parties and the leftist Peace Now move- ment. When the antagonists began to jostle each other, the police rounded up several, including Mr. Pollack and Mr. Merzel. How the two slipped into the building is the subject of the investigation. They hurled threats and abuse at the two Palestin- ians until police intervened. Various parties differed over how close the Kach pair got to the Palestinians. Police sources insisted the detainees were never in danger. Mr. Pollack, who carried the Uzi, claimed he had no intention of doing physical harm. Mr. Husseini and Mr. Ashrawi are among the small group of Palestinian activists and intellectuals who have met with U.S. Sec- retary of State James Baker on each of his several trips to Jerusalem between May and July. They were brought in for questioning in connection with a meeting last week in London, where they alleged- ly had contact with officials of the Palestine Liberation Organization, in violation of Israeli law. The two were questioned in separate rooms and left under police escort after posting bail. N N
