FLORENCE KARABENICK AND FRED RAPOPORT found fame and fortune. Do you suppose he would resu- me his search for the miss- ing pennies?" Just before his execution in front of a large crowd of Polish spec- tators, Potocki recited the blessing "Blessed are You, 0 Lord . . . who sanctifies Your name before multi- tudes." Wish to sincerely thank their many wonderful relatives and friends for their good wishes and thoughtfulness. • Sources and further readings: The story of the rabbi and the missing jewel is translated in Louis Jacobs, Jewish Law, p. 50. Count Valentine Potocki was executed on May 24, 1749. Arthur Cygielman reports in the Encyclopedia Judaica that after his execution, "a local Jew, Eliezer Ziskes, pretending to be a Christian, succeeded through bribery in collecting some of the ashes and a finger from the corpse, and these were even- tually buried in the Jewish cemetery. From the soil over the grave of Potocki, who was called by them the ger tzedek — the righteous proselyte — there grew a big tree which drew vast pilgrimages of Jews. . . . The Jews of Vilna cele- brated the anniversary of Potocki's death by reciting the Mourner's Kad- dish and by making pilgrimages to his purported grave on the Ninth of Av and the High Holy Days" (13:935). NEWS Western Wall Keeps Rabbi Jerusalem (JTA) — Rabbi Yehuda Getz withdrew his resignation as rabbi of the Western Wall last week. The rabbi had submitted his resignation earlier in the week in a row over plans for a coeducational ceremony at the plaza in front of the Wall by Gadna, a paramilitary youth corps. Rabbi Getz, who fiercely opposes the mingling of men and women at the Wall, said he was satisfied by a com- promise worked out to en- sure decorous behavior by the youngsters during a ceremony that will take place later this month. The compromise calls for boys and girls to be segregated during the ceremony, and ensures they will not remain at the plaza after it ends. It was worked out among Religious Affairs Minister Avner Shaki; the Chief Rab- binate director, Rabbi Eitan Eisman; and the Gadna commander, Col. Yisrael Assaf. Rabbi Getz had said he would accept a solution if it were approved by the chief rabbis. Rabbi Eisman's presence at the meeting ap- peared to signify that the agreement did indeed enjoy the endorsement of Chief Rabbis Avraham Shapira and Mordechai Eliahu. Rabbi Getz, 67, said he would resume his position. ■ Compare the rest we're still the best!
