While the older members
listened to the Yiddish lec-

It's not surprising that Beth

young to its spacious
quarters. This synagogue — a
virtual Jewish world of its
own — typifies the diversity of
life in this most Jewish city.
It's a city where young and
old, Cuban and American,
tourists and year-round
residents can all enjoy a full-
flavored Jewish life, Miami
style. 0

n the walls at Saul's
Deli are photos of
classic New York
delis. The waitresses wear T-
shirts which read, in part, "A
New York Deli." And on the
counter are all the staples of
a New York deli: slices of cor-
ned beef, plump salamis,
slabs of lox, fresh bagels.
But Saul's deli is nowhere
near New York. Instead, I
found it on a sunny, tree-lined
street in Berkeley, Calif.
Finding it was one of the
pleasures of my visit to
Berkeley. I'd sampled Califor-
nia style cuisine and Bay
Area ambiance, but now I was
eating corned beef flown
straight from New York.
I was watching a counter-
man who wore one gold earr-
ing as he clowned with

customers, some of them
dressed in decidedly funky
fashions. As for the
waitresses, the full message
on the back of their white T-
shirts read, "A New York Deli
in Berkeley."
Indeed, New York-style
delis are in many far-flung
places. And for the Jewish
traveler in search of corned
beef on rye, discovering a
classic deli in an exotic locale
can add adventure to any trip.
When I found Nate's Deli in
the heart of downtown Palm
Springs, for example, I sat en-
joying a pastrami on rye —
and wondering whether
Frank Sinatra or Sonny Bono
would show up.
They're just two of the
celebrity patrons who satisfy
their corned beef cravings in
a deli that's been a Palm
