The Jewish Community Center together with Eric Harris & Stuart Rogoff presents a 10 week dance instruction class for 6th and 7th graders taught by a professional instructor organizations can cooperate and learn from each other. "My job is to support the ef- forts of these groups and help them implement their ideas whenever I can," explains Ms. Thomerson who is active in the Lake Orion parent group. "Some groups started within the school district; some are now integrated with the school district and some com- munity action groups work independently from the schools. Each is unique and diverse depending upon the needs of their community, yet each has the same goal. The Walled Lake Families in Action Group is only 2 years old but has made good progress says Joyce Weiner, president. "We have over 200 active families in the group," says Ms. Weiner, "and we're involv- ed with Project Hotel and DARE. What we'd like to do is to get more counselors at the elementary school level to deal with some of these pro- blems that begin at an early age." Much of the work of the Far- mington Families in Action group is part of the school district's health curriculum. According to president Betty. Nicolay, some of the more re- cent programs that are suc- cessful include the Babes Pro- gram, a seven-week program for third-graders that focuses on self-esteem, decision- making, and preventing substance abuse, the Fifth Grade Night for parents and kids, and the October Drug Awareness Month, the time in which many special pro- grams and events are planned. The problems of alcohol and other drug use are so per- vasive that no single or sim- ple approach can solve it. In each community and in each school, the problem must first be recognized, approached and creatively attacked. First Night/Birmingham, for example, is one communi- ty's efforts to offer a range of alternatives to the traditional New Year's Eve celebration by showcasing Michigan ar- tistic talent in an entertain- ing, family-centered, non- alcoholic celebration. More than 8,000 families attended the premiere First Night December 31, 1990. This New Year's Eve, Shain Park in Bir- mingham will be the heart of the activity for this year. Another important reason that the results of these parent action groups are en- couraging is they focus on developing skills as well as sharing information.
