Programs involv- ing Jewish education in the community are created and executed by the JEC. With This Ad The National Conference of Synagogue Youth and the Young Israel Teens will begin the first of a series of nine pre- Yom Toy Shiurim (classes) for teen-agers and adults. The classes deal with developing an understanding of and an appreciation for the significance of the Jewish holidays and their rituals. The first shiur, 5:30 p.m. Sept. 5 at Yeshivat Akiva, is entitled "Teshuva: The Pro- cess of Return?' The guest speaker will be Rabbi. Dov Loketch, rabbi of Congrega- tion Mogain Avraham in Southfield. Following the class there will be an optional dinner at Sara's Restaurant on the corner of Ten Mile and Greenfield. Regional NCSY Leadership Training Seminar for Regional and Chapter officers will take place Labor Day weekend at the Young Israel of Southfield. Highlights of the program will be speakers Rabbi Marc Volk of Yeshivat Akiva, Rabbi Elimelech Gold- berg of the Young Israel of Southfield and Rabbi Mark Cohn, Regional Director of NOSY. For information, call Anne Weinstein, 559-4392. Doreen Hermelin UJA Women Name Chairman Doreen Hermelin was in- stalled as chairman of the United Jewish Appeal Midwest Regional Women's Division. She is immediate past president of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit Women's Division. Mrs. Hermelin also serves on the boards of the Agency for Jewish Education, Con- gregation Shaarey Zedek, Women's American ORT -and Sinai Hospital. She is a member of the Women's Committee of Bar- Ilan, Mizrachi Women and Hadassah. Maple-Drake Plans Classes A new Youth Theater class with Nancy Gurwin will start 5-6:30 p.m. Sept. 4 at Maple- Drake for nine weeks. Young people ages 8-13 will learn about stage movement and voice. Bridge lessons will be of- fered Sept. 5 at Maple-Drake. A variety of levels are available from beginner to ad- vanced student. Classes are mornings, afternoons and evenings, on Mondays, Tues- days and Thursdays. Bernie will start teaching magic classes for the fall semester at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 7 for children ages 6-12 at Maple-Drake. This class will meet for four weeks. Rose Wolok will describe re- cent experiences in Israel where she lived for two months. She will concentrate on the concerns of Israeli women.
