Tel Aviv (JTA) — Anne
Pollard, the former wife of
convicted spy Jonathan
Pollard, claims she is being
held against her will in a
psychiatric hospital in Bat
Yam.
Ronit Katz, a lawyer
whom Pollard has retained,
said Aug. 14 she would ap-
peal to the Tel Aviv District
Psychiatric Committee and,
if need be, to the Tel Aviv
District Court.
The lawyer said Pollard
was tricked into entering the
Abarbanel hospital. Citing
Pollard's lack of proficiency
in Hebrew, the lawyer said
she did not understand that
Abarbanel was a psychiatric
facility.
Pollard claims to have
been taken to the hospital by
an unnamed "contact man"
in the Prime Minister's Of-
fice to whom she had appeal-
ed for help in getting
medical treatment.
Pollard was admitted Aug.
8 amid contradictory reports
about her hospitalization
and her physical and mental
state.
The hospital's deputy di-
rector, Dr. Moshe Zohar,
said she applied voluntarily
for physical and mental
treatment on the advice of
friends.
He denied she is being for-
cibly held in the hospital, in
an isolation ward. "She is
free to leave whenever she
wants to," he said.
Zohar declined comment
on reports that Pollard
would be treated for drug
addiction, saying it was too
early to draw any conclu-
sions about her condition.
Attorney Katz has denied
reports that Pollard is a drug
addict, as well as stories that
she had repeatedly re-
quested hospitalization at
several medical facilities
throughout Israel, where she
is reported to have "run wild
in the emergency wards."
Doctors at Hadassah-
University Hospital in
Jerusalem who have ex-
amined Pollard said they
could find nothing physical-
ly wrong with her. Pollard
says she feels sick and
suffers abdominal pains.
Pollard, who was divorced
from her husband this spr-
ing, was paroled in April
1990 after serving 40 mon-
ths of a five-year jail term in
the United States in connec-
tion with Jonathan's es-
pionage activities for Israel.
She complained of suffer-
ing from a rare digestive

1

disorder and other illnesses
while incarcerated and
claims to have been incor-
rectly treated.
U.S. authorities permitted
her to come to Israel for
medical treatment.

Bush Won't
Help Pollard

Washington (JTA) — Pres-
ident Bush has made clear
that he is not planning to
commute the life sentence
imposed on Jonathan
Pollard in March 1987 when
he was convicted of spying
for Israel.
"There's no such con-
sideration," the president
said in reply to a reporter's
question Aug. 18 at a golf
course near his vacation
home in Kennebunkport,
Maine.
"A U.S. court found him
guilty. No one is considering
him a hostage," Bush said.
He was referring to at-
tempts by supporters in the
United States to link
Pollard's case with U.S.
efforts to enlist Israel's coop-
eration to obtain the release
of Western hostages held in
Lebanon.
Pollard's lawyer, Alan
Dershowitz, and his rabbi,
Avi Weiss, asked Bush in an
open letter last week to
commute Pollard's sentence
as a "reciprocal gesture" to
Israel.
Israel has pointedly
distanced itself from that
appeal.

Israel Aided
Release

Paris (JTA) - Israel may
deserve some credit for the
release this month of two
Western hostages held cap-
tive in Lebanon, a French
magazine believes.
Edward Tracy and John
McCarthy may owe their
freedom, at least in part, to
secret negotiations begun
here two years ago of which
Israel was very much a part,
according to an article in the
weekly Le Journal du
Dimanche. McCarthy, an
Englishman, was freed Aug.
8, and Tracy, an American,
was freed Aug. 11.
Their releases are widely
believed to have been the
first fruits of clandestine
meetings held in Paris bet-
ween Israeli officials and
representatives of Hez-
bollah.
