of numerous popular songs
and displays lyrics on a screen
or television monitor. Ms.
Greene encourages patrons to
sing the melody lines and oc-
casionally performs a song
herself.
Ms. Green says she will con-
sider herself a successful
entertainer when she can
earn a full-time living as a
singer and be assured that
jobs and income will be
steady. "I want to know that
I have a regular job because
I'm good at what I do. That
would be success. I don't have
to be any kind of star — I'm
too old for that. I want to be
able to do what I do well and
make a living at it.
"I've been trying to be a
performer all my life. That's
who I am and what I'm sup-
posed to do. So now, success
would be to let me do it and
pay me for it. You don't have
to pay me a lot of money —

good money would be nice.
But just let me survive at who
I'm supposed to be. That
would mean success to me."
During the past six years,
Ms. Greene has held a
number of "civilian" jobs to
supplement her income. But
she resists the idea of return-
ing to work outside of music,
saying it diverts too much of
her energy. "I'm very good at
being a secretary or a hostess
or waitress," she says. "But
that's not who I am. And I'm
not going to be those people
anymore. It costs me too
much personally and it takes
me away from my music .. .
I went to college to be a per-
former. I'm obsessed and I
think that's what it takes."
Ms. Greene's other obses-
sion is a children's musical
program she is developing as
part of her social work studies
at Wayne State. The program
is intended to raise the self-
esteem of underprivileged
and abused children. "It's the
same situation as my show. It
appears that there's no
market and no money for
what I want to do, but I'm go-
ing to find a way to make it
fly.
". .. At least I don't have a
family to take care of. I don't
know how I'd do it. Besides, I
think it would be dangerous
for me to ever have children
because I'm so scatterbrain-
ed. I would put them
someplace and not remember
where I put them. I'm sure I
would have lost them years
ago." ❑
