Continued from preceding page

you've got an experienced but
travel-weary entertainer.
Despite this broad range of
experience and critical ac-
claim nationally, fame and
fortune have eluded the ef-
fervescent Oak Park native.
She remains "obsessed" with
her career, but after two
decades of struggle she is
slightly frustrated and feels
some lingering self-doubt.
"This business is just a
bunch of nonsense and a
bunch of bumpy roads. And
whenever you think you've
handled all the nightmares
you can handle, you get a
brand new one that you didn't
know you were going to get,"
she says.
"I'm obsessed with my
music and obsessed with try-
ing to be good at it. And I
always feel that I'm not good
enough . . . I keep thinking
that maybe there's something
I'm not doing . . . I feel maybe
I have to work harder develop-
ing my voice; maybe I haven't
practiced enough. But I
always think that I didn't do
enough rather than I'm going
to quit."
Ms. Greene returned to
Detroit one year ago after
spending seven months enter-
taining on a cruise ship that
sailed daily between Miami
and the Bahamas. A corn-
bination of boredom and
seasickness lured her back to
dry land. Upon her return to
Detroit, she enrolled in the
social work program at
Wayne State and began
renewing her musical con-
tacts in the metro area.
She says that the notion of
settling down in one area is
discomforting. "I'm more
comfortable living out of a
suitcase — in temporary
situations, I guess."
It has been especially dif-
ficult, she says, because of
limited financial resources. "I
beat my head against the wall
trying to get financial aid and
scholarships for school. It is
the most horrific, humiliating
and deflating experience that
someone at my age (40ish)
would have to deal with. And
the only people that would
help me were the Hebrew
Free Loan people — my own
people. And they gave me a
$1,000 loan . ."
Although her energies are
now partially focused on
schooling, she remains un-
daunted in her pursuit of a
full-time performance career.
She performs her own show
once each month and sings in
clubs once or twice per week.
She also earns extra income
for school as a Karaoke
hostess in area bars. Karaoke
is an audio-visual machine
that plays the background in-
strumental and vocal tracks
