Michigan has done little to
help the Pollard cause,
group members are en-
couraged.
"Of course it is very impor-
tant that we have major
leaders in the community on
our side. But just as impor-
tant are the grassroots peo-
ple, the regular citizens in
the community," said Mrs.
Racey. "We need them even
more, in a sense."
Local Jewish organiza-
tions prefer to wait and see.
"It's an issue of making
sure that before we act that
we have the full facts and
understanding of the case,"
said Sharona Shapiro, who
directs the Detroit chapter of
the American Jewish Com-
mittee.
But for the Pollard
faithful, the time is now.
They are collecting
signatures on a petition to
send to President George
Bush.
Nationally, the mood
among the organized Jewish
community is shifting. B'nai
Brith's West Coast region
convention resolved that the
punishment Mr. Pollard has
received has been "unduly
harsh and excessive" and
that his sentence was
"unprecedented." The
American section of the
,World Jewish Congress re-
cently called for the com-
mutation of Mr. Pollard's
sentence to time served,
which is tantamount to ask-
ing for his immediate
release.
Still, some national organ-
izations have not embraced
Mr. Pollard's cause.
"This was not seen as an
American Dreyfus. Mr.
Pollard was obviously guil-
ty," said Sam Rabinove,
chief legal counsel for the
American Jewish Com-
mittee. Even though anti-
Semites "are making hay"
over the Pollard case, Mr.
Rabinove said, the AJC
could not defend someone
who has been accused of
