he City of Hope held a
fund-raiser July 31 to
celebrate summer at
Crosswinds Mall in West
Bloomfield. More than 200
guests dined and danced to
the music of David Ball &
Co., with special ap-
pearances by
Ortheia
Barnes and Millie Scott.
Manuel's restaurant inside
the mall provided the Mex-
ican fare and mariachi
music.
Many of the volunteers
were young professionals
like Dana Saulles, Arden
Lisnek, Ilene Hafner,
Steve Krastof and Bruce
Beresh. Ms. Saulles was co-
chairman of the event. She
just returned from Califor-
nia touring the Beckman
Research Institute and was
excited about the ad-
vancements in cancer and
AIDS research. "I'm here to
raise funds and increase the
knowledge of the public
about City of Hope," said
Ms. Saulles. Mr. Beresh
became involved in memory
of his mother Ruth Beresh,
who was an active City of
Hope member. He cited the
help of mall developer
Morris Margulies and
Manuel's restaurant.

SUPERB SWIMMERS
The Northwest Suburban
Swim League held their
championship finals on July
27. To celebrate the 30th
anniversary, parents par-
ticipated in a relay. The
parents of the Cranbrook
swim team won the event
with help from swimmer
Danny Katzenstein, a
teacher at Birmingham's
Berkshire Middle School.

Mr. Katzenstein swam for
Cranbrook Swim Club as a
youngster and now belongs
to the club with his family.
The Orchard Valley Club
adult swimmers came in se-
cond, winning their heat but
losing to Cranbrook by four
one-hundredths of a second.
The Orchard Valley adult
relay consisted of Steve
Matz, Sandy McDonald,
Craig Schwartz and
Howard Schwartz.

SASSY FINALIST
Mara Reinstein,
daughter of Alan and Nattie
Reinstein of Farmington
Hills was recently named
one of three finalists in the
1991 annual Sassy magazine
"guest editor" competition.
Mara is the youngest of the
finalists. She is a sophomore
at North Farmington High
School.
Several thousand entrants
vied for this competition by
providing writing samples
and discussing how they
would function as a guest
editor. The contest focused
on how one must be both
compulsive and laid back for
