Help Possible
For Syrian Jewry

With the surprising
revival of the Middle East
peace process, supporters of
Syria's 4,500 stranded Jews
are working to take advan-
tage of what may be an un-
precedented window of op-
portunity.
"We think there might
well be a change in atmo-
spherics," said Gilbert
Kahn, executive director of
the Council for the Rescue of
Syrian Jews. "The fact is
that there is a clear sense
this is an issue of concern to
the administration and
members of Congress. That
is being read very clearly in
Syria."
Mr. Kahn was in Washing-
ton recently, urging Con-
gress to keep up the pressure
on the Damascus regime — a
message that he said
resonated well on Capitol
Hill.
Syrian Jewry supporters,
Mr. Kahn said, do not want
to link their efforts to the
Middle East peace process.
Still, there is mounting hope
that the negotiations now
underway will lead to a
breakthrough.
"There is reason to suspect
that if Assad wants to take
his rhetoric and turn it into
action, dealing with the
question of Syrian Jewry
may be one of the things he
may do," he said.

New Boost
For Freedom Bill

It's been tough going for
promoters of the Religious
Freedom Restoration Act,
the measure designed to
overturn the Supreme
Court's decision in the so-
called peyote case.
But last week, supporters
of the bill — which some
Jewish activists have argued
is the most important re-
ligious liberties measure in
decades —received a boost
when Rep. Robert K. Dor-
nan, a California Repub-
lican, signed on as a co-
sponsor. There are now more
than 80 co-sponsors of the
measure, introduced recent-
ly by Rep. Stephen Solarz,
D-N.Y.
Mr. Dornan's support for
the bill is particularly im-
portant because he is a well-
known opponent of abortion.
In recent weeks, some anti-
abortion groups have press-
ed their argument that the
bill would promote abortion
because it does not
specifically prohibit claims
that a woman's religious
beliefs might mandate abor-
tion in certain instances. ❑
