nside Temple Sinai, the
largest Reform congrega-
tion in New Orleans,
there's much for the visitor to
see, including a sanctuary
with its original Tiffany
chandeliers and an im-
pressive Jewish modern art
collection.
But outside the synagogue
is a special highlight. A door
opens out onto a surprising
garden. A tranquil and
fragrant place, it is lined with
yew trees, japonicas,
magnolias and fragrant
flower beds.
Near the front is a special
plaque in Braille, for this
garden was especially design-
ed to be enjoyed by the Jewish
blind.
"All the plants and flowers
here are meant to be felt and
touched," explains Rowland
Farrald, a synagogue member
who doubles as tour guide
when visitors come to the
spacious synagogue at 6227
St. Charles Street.
The Garden for the Blind
can also be enjoyed by those
who are sighted. They, too,
can savor plants and flowers
that are fragrant and
delightful to touch.
This is just one of a number
of unusual gardens that can
add pleasure to a Jewish
traveler's itinerary. Visitors
often come to admire
synagogue architecture or ar-
tifacts. But the gardens that
adjoin synagogues or Jewish
cultural institutions are also
noteworthy.
Biblical gardens, sculpture
gardens, Holocaust memorial
gardens — all of these can
enhance a trip and flavor it
with the special delight that
a garden brings.
In Providence, R.I., for ex-
ample, a visit to Temple Beth-
El at 70 Orchard Avenue on
Wayland Square should in-
clude the biblical garden on
the upper patio.
All the plants in this
garden are either specifically
mentioned in the Bible or
symbolic of biblical texts.
They include myrtle, saffron,
andora junipers, a willow tree,
a mountain ash tree, and
espaliered pyracantha in the
form of seven branched
menorot.
In the center of the garden
is a weeping mulberry bush
which shades two stone
tablets. With the help of
careful pruning, this tree
droops in the exact shape of
the tablets.
In the heart of
western
Pennsylvania is
one of the
foremost biblical
gardens in the
United States.
Beth-El congregants are
justly proud of their award-
winning biblical garden,
originally dedicated in May
1960 during Rhode Island
Heritage Week. It earned the
May Duff Walters Church
Garden Award from the Na-
tional Council of State
Garden Clubs. It's an award
given to outstanding church
and synagogue gardens.
Also in Providence —
which, for a small New
England city, has an im-
pressive number of Jewish at-
tractions — is the Rhode
Island Holocaust Memorial
Museum and Garden, which
is part of the state's Jewish
Community Center at 401
Elm Grove Avenue.
This is a garden of natural
beauty and symbolic
