Sports For Israel
Plans Maccabi
Philadelphia — The United
States Committee Sports for
Israel (USCSFI) is now accep-
ting athlete and coach ap-
plications for the 59th
Australian Maccabi Carnival,
to be held in Melbourne,
Australia, Dec. 18-1991-Jan.
6, 1992. The United States ex-
pects to participate in open
competition (over 16) in
basketball (men's), golf
(men's), swimming, table ten-
nis, tennis, track and field
and volleyball, and master's
(over 35) table tennis, tennis
and swimming.
As with all Maccabi events,
sports competition and the
promotion of friendship and
unity among Jewish athletes
are the goals of the Games. A
100-member U.S. delegation,
up from 45 in 1987, is ex-
pected to join fellow Jews
from the seven Australian
states, Brazil, England, Mex-
ico, New Zealand, Russia and
South Africa for the two-week
competition.
Held every year for Maccabi
clubs across Australia, par-
ticipation in this competition
will mark the United States'
second appearance at the Car-
nival. Sponsored by the
USCSFI, U.S. participation in
the Carnival is self-funded. In
Sinai Hospital's depart-
ment of rehabilitation
medicine will sponsor a golf
outing for physically
challenged adults and
rehabilitation professionals,
Aug. 15-16 at Macomb Coun-
ty Community College's
(MCCC) South Campus in
Warren.
Offered for the first time in
the metro Detroit area, the
two-day workshop called
"First Swing," will cover prin-
ciples and techniques for
teaching golf to disabled
sportsmen and women.
The course will be taught
by National Amputee Golf
Association (NAGA) Ex-
ecutive Director Bob Wilson
and Lynn Waldecker, of Oasis
Golf Center in Livonia, a
member of the Ladies Profes-
sional Golf Association
(LPGA).
The first day of the work-
shop will be held specifically
for rehabilitation medicine
professionals such as occupa-
tional, physical and recrea-
tional therapists. The second
day will offer the expertise of
these professionals to
physically challenged adults
who are anxious to learn the
game of golf. Both sessions
will include classroom in-
struction, as well as an oppor-
tunity for a hands-on prac-
tical application of principles
and techniques taught. The
hands-on demonstrations and
practice rounds will be held
from 1:15-4:40 p.m. Aug. 15
and 1:30-3:30 p.m. Aug. 16.
In addition to Sinai Hospi-
tal and the NAGA, other
sponsors of the golf workshop
include: Disabled American
Veterans, the Professional
Golf Association (PGA) and
Progressive Orthopedics,
located in Southfield.

Swing," call Elaine South,

Hill, 493-5346.

modern exhibition and con-
vention in 1898 and 1904,
when the Universal Scien-
tific and Philanthropic Ex-
position and the World's
Fourth Sunday School Con-
vention, respectively, were
held in the city.
