Jerusalem (JTA) — Gad
Ya'acobi, the minister of
communications in Israel's
last national unity govern-
ment and a past minister of
economic planning, an-
nounced that he is a can-
didate for leadership of the
Labor Party.
The announcement puts
him in the ring with the two
veteran Labor leaders,
Shimon Peres and Yitzhak
Rabin, who have been the
sole contenders for chair-
manship of the Labor Party
since the late 1970s.
Mr. Ya'acobi, speaking at
a news conference in Tel
Aviv, vowed to break the
pattern and rid Labor of its
"bureaucratic image." He
said it is time the leadership
was contested by more than
just the two rivals.
In fact, that is already
starting to happen. Knesset
member Ora Namir has also
declared her candidacy.
Another likely contender
is Yisrael Kessar, secretary-
general of the Histadrut
trade union federation.
And an announcement is
expected within days from
another former minister,
Moshe Shahal, who has held
the energy and infrastruc-
ture portfolio and was party
whip under Mr. Peres'
leadership.
Another possible con-
tender is Mordechai Gur, a
former Israel Defense Force
chief of staff who has served
in previous Cabinets and
now sits in the Knesset.

Crescent Flags
To Fly In Israel

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The pos-
sibility of a regional peace
conference has been a
bonanza for Israeli flag
makers.
One of the largest, Yitzhak
Berman of Jerusalem, has
just completed 900 Syrian
flags to be ready in case
President Hafez al-Assad of
Syria decides to visit
Jerusalem.
Mr. Berman says he also
has orders for several hun-
dred Jordanian, Saudi Ara-
bian, Egyptian and Israeli
flags from the same client,
whom he declined to name
but is believed to reside in
the United States.
According to Mr. Berman,
whose five sons — quin-
tuplets — are serving in the
Israel Defense Force, the run
on flags is a good sign that
peace is on the way and
"perhaps represents the
beginning of a conference."
