Most recently, the Con-
ference issued its first polit-
ical statement, asking the
governor and legislature to
seek "humane alternatives
to the proposed 1992 budget
cuts, affecting so many
thousands of individuals,
families and children in
areas essential to their well-
being and to the over-all
well-being of the State of
Michigan and work to
restore funding to vital
health and welfare pro-
grams."
The statement anticipates
that government cuts will
force many agencies, in-
cluding Jewish social service
agencies like Jewish Voca-
tional Service, Kadima
residential care services for
Jewish adults with mental
illness and JARC, to cut
their budgets.
In April, the Conference
and Gov. John Engler's of-
fice attracted nearly 300
guests at a Holocaust
memorial program at the
Michigan Historical Muse-
um in Lansing.
Ms. Nessel has been
meeting with represent-
atives from the various
cities, facilitating com-
munication between them.
"We are progressing as
planned. We are bringing
together the leaders of the
state," Ms. Nessel said. "We
need to take things one step
at a time and do them
right."
