Rules Committee meeting
that eliminated the jump
ball after each completed
field goal.
But Mr. Goldman's finest
achievements came while
leading his alma mater,
Detroit Tech, as basketball
coach. He became the most
successful coach in the
school's history by winning
143 games and losing 75.
Mr. Goldman, who is
scheduled to attend the
November induction at Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek,
also was the principal
designer of the 155 mm tank
shell, used so effectively by
allied forces to blast through
German defenses at Nor-
mandy. Known as "Goldy"
to friends and family, Mr.
Goldman teaches applied
technology at Oakland
Community College. ❑

Menorah Awards

The Michigan Trade Union
Council for Histadrut will
honor this year's recipients of
the Menorah Award, Harry
Lester, director, District
Council 29 of the United
Steelworkers of America, and
James Howell, vice president
of operations of National
Steel Corporation at a
testimonial dinner Aug. 15 at
the Grand Manor at Fairlane
in Dearborn.
James Howell is responsible
for the Great Lakes Division
in Ecorse, Granite City Divi-
sion in Granite City, Ill.,
Midwest Division in Portage,
Ind., American Steel in
Detroit, and the National
Steel Pellet Co. in Hibbing,
Minn. He also serves as presi-
dent of ProCoil, a joint ven-
ture of National Steel and
Japan's Marubeni Corpora-
tion.
Harry Lester is responsible
for the overall administration
of a USWA District with
30,000 members in Michigan
and Northwestern Ohio,
representing workers in steel,
chemicals, foundries, con-
tainers, paper, electronics,
health care and the public
sector.
As secretary of the USWA's
negotiating team with Na-
tional Steel Corporation, Mr.
Lester was responsible in
1986 for negotiating a
cooperative partnership
agreement.
The proceeds of the dinner
will be used for the NeoNatal
Intensive Care Unit at the
Golda Meir Medical Center
Hasharon Hospital.
