because the old neighborhood
is just more dependent on pro-
ximity to such a facility, and
it is closer to the required
labor market.
Prentis Manor and Borman
Hall are a few minutes' drive
from most of the Jewish com-
munity, including almost
everyone who is low-income
and/or without an automo-
bile. In addition, there are the
driving elderly who will not
drive on freeways or the nar-
row, high-speed roads of West
Bloomfield. These are the
people who enter the Home
for Aged and who want to
visit loved ones there. They
are the people who may have
to choose their relatives' nur-
sing home because of its
Jewishness and subsidy, but
then are unable to go see
them.
Staff is also a foreseeable
problem. Stability of low-
skilled work forces is never
good, and worsens as the
distance from potential
workers' residences increases.
The problem is especially
acute where there are night
shifts, when there are no
buses and would-be workers
have no car or family member
available to drive at that
time.
For sure, one building in
West Bloomfield may cost less
than two in Detroit and
Southfield. Then the pro-
blems of visitors, volunteers
and staff will show up later,
with demands for expensive
and even impossible transpor-
tation solutions. Federation
should think hard about a
new location for the Jewish
Home for Aged before we win
the financial battle and lose
the war.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 9, 1991
It is an unwarranted
assumption that any further
Jewish immigration to Israel
would have to be halted if
Israel would be compelled to
exchange land for peace.
The number of immigrants
that Israel can admit depends
on their industrialization pro-
gram rather than on the size
of the country. A sincere
peace with the neighboring
Arab states and the lifting of
the economic boycott against
Israel would open the entire
Middle East to Israel's con-
sumer goods.
Israel is the only country in
the area that has an ample
supply of skilled workers and
technicians. If Israel were at
peace with its neighbors, the
highly industrialized nations
of the world would show a
great interest in establishing
industrial complexes in
Israel.
Furthermore, Israel at
peace could divert much of its
resources from the production
and purchase of armaments
to the production of more con-
sumer goods. That would
raise the standard of living
for the people of Israel.

The Quakers
And The PLO
Your fine article "Such
Good Friends" (July 26) calls
for two additional notes.
First, being so relevant to
events of the present, your
readers may think that the
cited critiques, including
mine, of Quaker (AFSC) in-
tervention in the Arab-Israeli
conflict were of recent origin.
Actually, they first appeared
over a decade ago, underscor-
ing that the AFSC's pro-PLO
activity and propaganda
under the guise of "even-
handedness" is an old ploy.
Second, seeing that Israel is
about to satisfy Quakers and
others by attending a con-
ference on the future of the
occupied territories, it is
urgent to recall part of their
hidden agenda. In my 1979
booklet The Friendly Perver-
sion there is a section titled
"Legitimating the PLO." It
drew attention to the hidden
agenda of groups like the
American Friends Service
Committee . -
"In Quaker Life for
September 1976, one Allan
Carter Kellum has an article
entitled 'Middle East Peace -
the Emerging Consensus: He
asserts that the Arabs no
longer want to throw the Jews
into the sea. The PLO has
replaced that objective with a
democratic secular state and
an 'even more conciliatory
short-range objective — a
Palestinian mini-state in the
West Bank and Gaza.' .. .
"Some spokesmen for the
AFSC's point of view are
more blunt. Joe Gerson (then
AFSC's regional director for
Palestinian issues in Cam-
bridge, Mass.) wrote in 1976:
" 'The two-state solution (or
transitional arrangement as
it is referred to in PLO circles)
is not only a 'nice' or 'moral'
solution, but it appears to be
in the long term interests of
both peoples. "
Drawing attention in a
Jewish publication to this
continuing hidden agenda
may help guard against over-
ly optimistic anticipations in
the face of the current
"peace" initiatives.
