The 14 college students and one graduate student are intern- ing at several area Jewish communal agencies through Project Join (Jewish Occupa- tional Intern Program). Supervised by Jewish Voca- tional Service, JOIN provides students with the opportuni- ty to experience possible careers in Jewish communal service and to recruit educated young people to work in the community as professional or lay leaders. The project, which helps students focus on their educa- tional and professional goals, places interns in agencies for eight weeks according to their interests. Interns work with profes- sionals on a wide range of community concerns, pro- blems and projects. They spend four days each week at their assignments and attend day-long seminars on Fridays. Organized by the JVS staff, the seminars include over- views of area agencies, tours of local facilities and discus- sion of current issues. They include in-depth discussions of the history, as well as cur- rent and future challenges in the Jewish community. In addition, time is set aside weekly for the interns to share and assess their intern- ship experiences. This year's 15 interns were chosen from 140 applicants. Project JOIN is funded by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit alloca- tion to Jewish Vocational Ser- vice, agency budgets and with private contributions. The 1992 Project JOIN in- terns are: Evan Albert (Jewish Home for Aged- Prentis Manor); Rebecca Broder (Sinai Hospital); Michele Davis (JVS-Adult Day Service); Beth Goldberg (Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith); Jennifer Gubkin (JVS-Project Outreach); Mark Hessen- thaler (JARC); Lynn Kantor (Jewish Federation); Jodi Klein (Jewish Community Center); Leslie Kollin (Agen- cy for Jewish Education); Karen Lee (Jewish Communi- ty Center); Peggy Berman (Hebrew Free Loan Associa- tion); Stacey Porvin (Jewish Family Service); Sara Schuster (Kadima); Marc Silverstone (Jewish Federa- tion Apartments); and Robert Weiner (Jewish Community Council).
