Catholic Youths
To Tour Camps

New York (JTA) - Tens of
thousands of Catholic
teenagers are expected to
visit the Auschwitz and
Birkenau death camps in
August for tours and semi-
nars on the Holocaust. The
program in which they will
participate will include ma-
terial on the uniquely Jew-
ish character of the event.
Most of the more than
50,000 youth from France,
Italy, Spain, Germany, the
Soviet Union and Poland
will stay for only a few hours
during their visits between
Aug. 5 and 17.
But many will stay over-
night, in the recently com-
pleted administration
building of the new
Carmelite convent a short
distance away from the
Auschwitz camp border, and
in a tent city being built spe-
cially to accommodate the
visitors on the grounds of the
new convent.
The largest number of
young people will be arriv-
ing for an overnight stay on
Aug. 16 ; after spending
several days in Czestochowa,
some 130 miles southwest of
Warsaw, where they will be
celebrating the sixth World
Youth Day.
More than a million young
Catholics are expected to
take part in the gathering at
Czestochowa.
The highlight will be a ral-
ly with Pope John Paul II,
who is making the stop on
his August 13-20 trip to
Poland and Hungary, during
which he will also meet with
Jewish leaders.

Three SLA
Soldiers Killed

Jerusalem (JTA) — Three
soldiers of the Israel- backed
South Lebanon Army were
killed last week when a
remote-controlled explosive
charge detonated in their
midst in the southern Leb-
anon security zone.
Two soldiers and a
Lebanese civilian were in-
jured by the blast, said to
have been triggered by the
extremist Shi'ite fundamen-
talist Hezbollah.
Gen. Yitzhak Mordechai,
the Israel Defense Force
commander for the northern
region said that the pro-
Iranian Hezbollah has
become the most serious
challenge to security in the
region.
The attack was the
deadliest in recent weeks
against the SLA, a largely
Lebanese Christian militia.
