Petoskey Temple
Plans Anniversary

The Hebrew Benevolent
Association of 14 Orthodox
Jewish citizens was founded
in Petoskey in 1896.
Samuel Rosenthal, an im-
migrant from Russia,
established himself in 1879
as a successful Petoskey
businessman and as a leader
of Petoskey Jews.
As Jewish families arrived
in Petoskey, Mr. Rosenthal
helped organize worship in
local homes and the rented
Methodist Church on
Howard. The group held
regular services and classes
for the children in the little
church.
Even after the association
was incorporated in 1909 as
B'nai Israel, the group still
did not own a place of wor-
ship, yet it wanted to observe
the Sabbath and Jewish
holidays.
Money was raised for the
synagogue by auctioning off
various honors and privileges.
Congregants donated money
to the synagogue for the
privilege of reading from the
holy scroll of rIbrah during the
service. Windows, doors and

Religion is more than ritual at Congregation Beth Shalom Religious School.
Beginning in the earliest grades, our students learn how to make ethical
decisions based on Jewish values. They learn how to behave and how to treat
others. In short, they learn how to be a mensch—a fine human being.
Congregation Beth Shalom students enjoy their Judaism, and they're proud of it.
Talk to our faculty, students and parents. They'll tell you why...
It's better at Congregation Beth Shalom.
Registration is now being taken for September classes (and there's a discount
for early payment). For information, call Cy Servetter, Education Director, at

only Jewish house of worship.
For more than 25 years the
temple remained Orthodox.
Strict dietary laws were
observed and services were
conducted entirely in Hebrew,
until 1923 when the temple
changed to Reform Judaism
with new trends.
Student rabbis have come
to the Petoskey temple from
the Hebrew Union College
since 1925 during the sum-
mer months, when temple at-
tendance grows with the
resort and tourist con-
gregants. This past year Rab-
bi Robert Shafran conducted
services as well as adult
education and children's
classes.
The member nucleus re-
mains small with approx-
imately 25 year-round
families living anywhere
from Sault Ste. Marie to Cen-
tral Lakes. There are approx-
imately 45 additional sum-
mer members who support
B'nai Israel although they
spend their winters in the
snowbelt.
