THE DIET WITH DIGNITY
Ministry
Official Quits
Jerusalem (JTA) —
Interior Minister Arye Deri
received a second jolt this
week, when the director
general of his ministry, Dov
Kehat, suddenly announced
his resignation.
The first blow fell with the
release of a report by State
Comptroller Miriam Ben-
Porat excoriating the
Interior Ministry for han-
ding out huge sums of
government money to re-
ligious institutions affiliated
with Mr. Deri's Shas party.
Although Mr. Kehat vig-
orously denied any connec-
tion between the report and
his decision to leave the of-
fice to which Mr. Deri had
appointed him, observers
noted that he was twice cited
by name in direct connection
with money transfers the
comptroller considered
suspect.
Mr. Deri himself has been
under police investigation
for the past year for alleged
financial improprieties, and
the state prosecutors re-
portedly will decide soon
whether to bring formal
charges against him.
Release of the comp-
troller's report intensified
demands for his resignation
and legislation pending in
the Knesset may force him
to quit for the duration of the
investigation.
Mr. Kehat's resignation,
which observers said was
bound to weaken Mr. Deri,
will take effect in October.
He said he is quitting to go
into private business.
Jets Hit
Lebanon Bases
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israeli
air force jets struck twice at
terrorist targets north of the
southern Lebanon security
zone last week and returned
safely to their bases, a
military spokesman an-
nounced.
He said the first raid hit
vehicles of Hezbollah, the
pro-Iranian Shi'ite funda-
mentalist group, at about 9
a.m. local time. The second
struck Hezbollah bases near
Jebl Fassa, described as a
staging area for incursions
against Israel and a
Katyusha rocket launching
site.
The air strike was the 13th
by Israel against targets in
Lebanon so far this year but
the first since the Lebanese
regular army took control of
areas of southern Lebanon,
including the port cities of
Sidon and Tyre a week ago.
