the Roman Catholic primate
of Poland, convinced the
cardinal not to apologize to
Riverdale, N.Y., rabbi, Avi
Weiss.
Four months earlier, Car-
dinal Glemp had accused
Rabbi Weiss of beating nuns
at a convent located at the
entrance to Auschwitz.
After the cardinal did not
retract his comment, Rabbi
Weiss — with Prof. Der-
showitz representing him —
sued him for defamation.
Perhaps most intriguing of
the many comments on the
imbroglio came from former
New York mayor Ed Koch,
now a New York Post colum-
nist:
"Knowing Henry
Siegman, the idea of his in-
voking such an ancient Or-
thodox practice can be liken-
ed only to Dracula asking for
the cross . . . seeking justice
not from his contemporary
world, but from the Or-
thodox Jewish world — mov-
ing to the world of the 'tallis'
from his radical Upper West
Side theology."
A more temperate assess-
ment came from Newsweek
general editor David A.
Kaplan, who predicted that
the bickering will "only get
more personal, . . . but it will
hardly begin to address some
of the legitimate questions
raised by Chutzpah. There
was a time when such a fight
would have been impossible;
a meek, uncertain ethnic
group would hide its
squabbles. No more. Chutz-
pah, schmutzpah, it's a great
country: let it all hang
